Down Ballot

Did I post this yet?

There's a lot of attention being paid to the Democratic Presidential primary. And with good reason: We're about to nominate someone who will reverse the disastrous course that the Bush Republicans have set us on.

But there are candidates running in down-ballot races who need your help today!

Democratic candidates for the Court of Appeals, State Auditor, Commissioner of Insurance, and Superintendent of Public Instruction must each receive a certain number of contributions of at least $10 in order to qualify for public financing.

The deadline to receive these contributions is May 6th. And if our Democratic candidates fail to get enough qualifying contributions, they could be in serious trouble come November.

Think about it. Your $10 contribution could make the difference, giving our candidates access to hundreds of thousands of dollars in public financing for their campaigns this fall.

That's why I need you to act today. Take a look at the following list of candidates. Pick one - or, better yet, several - and mail in your contribution of at least $10. (Candidates for these judicial seats can accept contributions up to $500. The other candidates can accept contributions up to $200.)

The following Democratic candidates still need qualifying contributions. Send them your contribution today!

Goodwin is now Past Threshold for Public Financing

I'm sure he'll come and do his own post, but congrats to Goodwin for qualifying.

First to Surpass Threshold for Voter-owned Elections Financing
Pilot Program Requires Minimum of 750 Low-Dollar Contributions from North Carolinians

In a record-time of six weeks, North Carolina's top candidate for Insurance Commissioner, Wayne Goodwin, today reported that his campaign has crossed the minimum threshold as required by the state's new voter-owned elections pilot program. The program requires those who opt in to raise at least $29,000 in increments of $10 to $200 from 750 citizens across the state in order to be eligible for public funds during the election. The maximum allowed is $238,000. Goodwin anticipates receiving more than 850 contributions by the May 6 deadline.

"I am proud to be one of the only candidates in a Council of State race to dedicate my campaign to this innovative and important program," Goodwin said. "The concept of voter-owned elections requires each candidate to garner true grassroots support from all across the state. This means no more special interest money buying your candidates. Voters have a reason to turn out to the polls - real choices for candidates who are the best for the job, not just the best at raising money."

Wayne Goodwin has pledged to run a campaign for the people, accepting no special interest money from insurance companies or PACs.

Goodwin currently serves as the Assistant Insurance Commissioner and Assistant State Fire Marshal under current Commissioner Jim Long, who has endorsed Goodwin's run for Insurance Commissioner. He served eight years in the North Carolina House of Representatives representing Richmond, Scotland, Montgomery and Stanly Counties before later joining the Department of Insurance staff.

He is a native of Hamlet and he and his wife, Melanie, have one daughter, Madison, and are expecting a second child in two weeks.

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
