After dark

Thanks to everyone for the spirit of civility and generosity on display today. I was madly disappointed at some of the outcomes, yet I see no choice but to redouble my efforts to help North Carolina find its way toward a more progressive future. Got any suggestions?

I'm especially happy that we haven't seen a lot of these
Of the sour variety, I mean
Thank you all for that.
A cure, just in case

A good article on libertarian paternalism
In the Chronicle of Higher Education. From what I can tell, "libertarian paternalism" is just a fancy phrase for "progressive." Of course, that's what authors of new books have to do ... dream up new words for old ideas so they can sell more stuff.
It's just creepy,
All day I've been going back and looking over the numbers and the percentages in the various races from yesterday and I swear they keep changing. WTF?
Progressive Democrats of North Carolina
They're adding in provisional ballots
...at least that's what I'm assuming. I noticed the same thing.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
Thanks Betsy,
could also be my addled brain comparing the Guilford County numbers to the statewide numbers too. I think everything will be a bit more clear tomorrow.
Progressive Democrats of North Carolina
No....I think it might take longer
...at least for me. I'm so tired from pulling all-nighters that I looked at Katie at dinner and told her she had something on her teeth. Everyone stopped and looked at me and burst out laughing. You see, she got braces last week. I'm the one who took her to get braces........sigh. We laughed so hard we were all in tears.
Provisional Ballots
I don't think they can add them in yet, they have to be separated and voted on before they are allowed to be counted. They are not allowed to be announced until the 13th.
Maybe I completely off here, but I that's what I gathered...
Levi
that's right.
Provisional ballots are not added into the official count until the votes are "canvassed" on May 13th.

Does that means 2nd place in labor is still in flux?
The results are Sooooooo tight.
Don't know if y'all have seen this
But Mildred Loving has died.
Sad news.
Of course I'm crazy, I'm a blogger. What's your excuse?
James....my thought...
Something you said recently about Easely governing with his hands cupped over his ears hit the sweet spot with me. I think we, as a group, could and ought to do more to influence our elected representatives on issues we feel are important...and to yell loud enough so they have no choice but to listen. I know there are methods/technologies available to make it easy to send BlueNC members a skeleton letter...have them flesh it out and send it on electronically via email or fax to the selected elected representatives. The NC Conservation Network does a good job helping their members communicate in just this way.
During the course of the past months I've heard several candidates asked a question on some subject and they've responded with their opinion/position. Not once did I hear any of them say something like "Well, my thoughts on this matter are such and such, but I'm open to other ideas and and to hear the views of constituents who may disagree."
We discuss a lot of views on many subjects here...and argue things vociferously...but if the candidates don't read here...or ignore what they read...we're kinda talking to the wind. I'm suggesting we find a way to periodically make our voices really heard on issues we feel are important.
I'm with you Stan
My new litmus test is simple: Do they listen? For all the crap Bev took, I gotta hand it to her - she listened. Enough people told her to knock off the mud slinging and she finally did. Was it calculated? Sure. Was it still evidence of having an open mind and being "influence-able"? I think so. Which is why I totally agree with you. We need to call candidates and elected officials out and insist that they listen - even if they don't end up agreeing.
Great points.
It begins with education
I really think a lot of public officials are quick to tune things out when they don't understand. And if the information isn't presented in a concise manner, they don't take the time to understand. Especially if the source or the viewpoint are considered far removed from the majority. Any public official is being pulled in many directions by many different people, so time is often an extremely limited and dwindling resource. Blogging encourages verbosity. It is simply the way of the medium and those who write. Sometimes I think if things were presented to the officials, to the candidates, to those who need to know, in a more direct, often mathematical way, we'd benefit and they would learn.
I am listening
I get many good ideas from the BlueNC crew. Add that to one-on-one interaction with voters, willingness to listen to opposing views (yes, right wing blogs do get you thinking...), and I'm about halfway to understanding the issues and how to make progress on them.

Ed, good people like you make it a point to listen and
consider opposing views. I expect if you end up disagreeing with someone you also honestly and factually answer why you chose to do so. Folks aren't always going to agree. I can respect someone's opposing view as long as they will communicate their reasons with understandable logic and fact-based rationale.
Jerry Meek endorses Obama
In case anyone missed this on The Dome:
Jerry Meek, NC Democratic Party chairman and a superdelegate, said this afternoon that he had decided to support Obama months ago but did not want to interfere with the state's primary.
I don't understand this advice from the AG's office.
Anybody got a logical explanation for this (directing colleges not to admit illegal immigrant kids who've gone to high school in NC) that doesn't involve the phrase, "It's an election year."?
"It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit." - Harry Truman
Just another reason why we need to build a wall...
...around each campus! Sheesh. It's not the children's fault they are .. nevermind. Choir. Preaching. Done.
True ...
but sometimes, with the right preaching, the choir sings loud enough to be heard on Jones St. :)
So illegal immigrant kids can join the military and fight for us, but the best and brightest among them can't go to college at NC system schools. That is effing stoopid.
And when they've served their tour and qualify for GI bill money ... NC system colleges will be closed to them. Even more effin stoopid.
"It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit." - Harry Truman
Exactly!
All because they chose to come here illegally when they were either in diapers or in utero. Punish them, I say. If they survive deployment! I am right with you - effing stoopid.
Hello? Are you all there? NO
Hello? Are you all there? NO illegals cannot join the military. Only legal residents can. Nice try but know your facts first.
Oh, that's right!
D'oh! They can only clean our houses, raise our children, cut our lawns, build our houses, work in substandard turkey processing plants, and other fun jobs like that.
Thanks!

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yet the Marines run their awesome recruitment ads on Spanish Language teevee ... in spanish. Are they recruiting legal foreign students? Legal farm workers? Legal construction workers? Are they targeting the kids they call "anchor babies" (who still don't speak american) that all those illegal immigrant parents ran over here and dropped fifteen, twenty years ago? Recruit the kid, but send illegal mom & dad home? Awesome idea. End snark.
Mr. Terrell, it seems the lines are being blurred more and more every day between this tirade your party is engaged in and all immigration from Mexico and central America. Where are the lines? Do you know any more? Can you tell a legal latino immigrant from an illegal latino immigrant, smart as you are? Of course you can't. You can't even communicate with them to ask any questions if they don't speak English, but the language they speak is no indication of their status as green card or no green card. If you cannot tell one from the other, how is the guy who's frustration and anger YOU are intentionally fueling supposed to figure it out?
The answer is easy. He won't figure it out. He'll treat all latinos the same. You can guess what's going to start happening in the streets.
Here's a few tips: Solve the problem of 1) the minimum wage being well below what any American family needs to live when both adults in the household are working, 2) fix NAFTA to stop the flooding of Mexican and south American commodity markets with cheap American corn and grains, and 3) effectively address companies in the US who recruit and hire illegal immigrants because they know those men and women will never complain about working conditions and never report regulatory violations to the State. (This includes imposing crippling fines on them and/or throwing a few CEOs in jail for a few months.)
If you do those three things, Mr. Terrell, I can assure you, you will be well on your way to solving this "problem" without hiring special state immigration officers or building new holding prisons or providing transportation south to hundreds of thousands of people who will begin looking for another way back to the US before they even get back home.

Sorry, forgot to ad, you're right ...
I didn't check the details. Here's the facts from the Arizona Republic:
And it wasn't always that legal residents could serve. That is new with this President and his grand misadventures in the near and middle east. From the Arizona Republic again,
I like it.

Brooks and Doonan in runoff?
Is there going to be a runoff that will cost the taxpayers of North Carolina a couple of million dollars for Labor Commish?

Provisionals have to be counted
and there could actually be a recount - automatic recount because bottom three are so close, though I haven't checked recently just how close they are. After that, then there will be a runoff for Labor Commissioner.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
2004 Supt. of Public Instruction runoff
Flashback to 2004 - Democratic runoff for Supt. of Public Instruction cost the taxpayers $3.5 million and had a turnout of 3%

Road trip to Denver
I am going out to Denver even if I don't get picked to be a delegate. I will be driving and figure if I can get 4 other people to go along (I have a mini van) it will cost about $175 a piece round trip (gas + motel room one night each way)
Any one interested?
