After Barack Obama said "please proceed" to Mitt Romney during a 2012 debate, the dynamics of both campaigns shifted. Romney revealed himself to be uninformed on even the most basic facts and was forced into a defensive posture. Obama attacked.
A similar series of events could be happening in Raleigh right now.
Pat McCrory's tortured rationale this week for his decision to end benefits for 72,000 unemployed workers has put his credibility at risk. So has his equivocation on abortion rights. It's a Romney rerun.
What happens now?
- Recruiting Democratic candidates will get easier. The General Assembly has miserable approval ratings. Incumbents will be especially vulnerable in 2014.
- Pat McCrory can't get ahead of the crazy, and is proving himself vulnerable as well. Look for the usual suspects to start positioning against him for 2016. We haven't heard much from Cowell and Cooper lately, but that's about to change. Early money matters in our privatized elections. Let the auction begin.
- Gary Pearce wrote about the possibility of Hagan running against McCrory. I don't see it. She seems like a shoo-in for re-election, especially against Tillis.
- Speaking of the Speaker, what are the chances he'll end up indicted in the next twelve months?
