Bash full

Hi everyone!

Just a quick note from a tired blogger to thank all who attended our First Annual BlueNC Blogger Bash in Chapel Hill today. What an amazing and inspiring collection of wonderful people you are!

Thanks to the excellent candidates who took time out of their busy schedules to be with us. When I have more brain cells available, I'll link to all their websites. In the meantime, a special a note of appreciation to Judge Bob Orr, Republican candidate for governor. It was a generous gesture on Bob's part to step into our blue venue for an afternoon of fellowship and fun. He is a good guy.

All in all, the day gave me much to think on many fronts. I'm not entirely sure what we're up to here, but I do know we're up to something big - something that could become really important in our state and in our world. You give me hope.

Sleep well, my friends.

James

PS Too bad I forgot to put out the three gallons of coleslaw, which are still in the garage refrigerator. Never let me be in charge of food.

Oh James,

that's too bad but also too funny, I just said to Bill: You know, for as many vegetarians who said they would be there, I didn't see anything that looked green.

Thanks for making an unforgettable afternoon possible.

Slaw

We were talking about slaw on the way home. Mystery solved. The beans next to the burgers, in the fatback free zone, were veg also, as were the pasta salads. Thanks Jane for whipping out the fixins.

Also, special thanks to Betsy

without whom none of this would have happened. She brought tables and video equipment and chairs and potato salad and a cabana and extension cords and a laptop and her wonderful daughter (and boyfriend) who did a great job helping with logistics and check in.

Thank you for all you do, Betsy. Hope you're home safe and sound.

Just made it home

There were a few rough spots out on the road, but we're home safe and sound.

Katie came home very, very inspired. She can't wait to see Lily again. They shared contact information. She would start talking about a person (always different people) and would stop and say things like, "These people are so cool" and then she'd be on to another person she'd met.

Most excellent!

I just placed this in the earlier thread, but I'll post it here as well.

Thanks to James and Jane for opening up their lovely home for the offline gathering. It was a great afternoon meeting so many BlueNC folks and candidates in such a beautiful setting. The NC Netroots rock.

I also have to give props to Bob Orr for his Art Pope Puppetmaster greeting. And we thought Republicans have no sense of humor. :)

Also, a shoutout to Colleen Flanagan -- very nice to meet you; still on the lookout for Senator Hagan's answers to my questions!

Glad you reposted . . .

As I said over on the other thread, I'm sure Bob will catch somebody's ire for his visit to enemy territory, but I want to applaud him. He comments about politics were insightful - as always - and his willingness to connect with us was both generous and much appreciated. I think he picked up a couple of votes, too.

Blogger Bash

James,

Thank you, your wife and everyone else who assisted for a great afternoon at your lovely home. Max and I had a great time and enjoyed meeting the candidates and fellow bloggers.

Through your efforts, Blue NC has become a powerhouse and influenced politics for the better in this state.

If you stop at the intersection in Carrboro at Weaver Street you will see a Bob Orr sign placed DIRECTLY in front of my Dan Besse sign, like two inches in front of it. I plan on remedying that today, and the Hampton Dellinger signs on South Greensboro that were placed in front of my Dan Besse signs.

Anyway, sorry I had to run so quickly, it was great seeing everyone!

Thank you James and Jane and Betsy,

It was a wonderful afternoon! I am already looking forward to next year's bash. I took so many pictures and they all turned out so good that I've put them on a slide show. (Please forgive me Radiogirl, these were the only two of you I took).

No worries, Momoaizo!

It's my mysterious radio aura - it baffles cameras. Now you know why I'm not on TV. ;)

Thanks to James and Jane for the invite, and thanks to everyone for a great time! It was so nice to put faces to the names around here.

Congrats to all!

Good times, good times

Though I spend a lot more time on BlueNC reading than writing, I'm certainly glad I went. It was such a fun feeling to put faces to the names I've been reading from and about, to see some old friends again and to meet some new ones. Thanks again to James and Jane for hosting this and to everyone else who helped make it possible. It's helpful to remind ourselves as often as we can that the progressive blogging community isn't just a collection of avatars but of real people, who are actually pretty awesome offline as well. :)

THANK YOU ALL!!!!

What a great time! Thank you for such a terrific afternoon. I had so much fun I didn't even realize it rained and certainly didn't realize we were sans coleslaw. What on earth does one do with 3 gallons of errant slaw?

Robin Anderson for Labor Commissioner

Sorry I had to leave early

Seems like I missed the most entertaining performances, dangit.
I had to leave at 5 and left right after Wayne Goodwin spoke.

Bruce & The E St band were pretty entertaining too though.
As usual they played for 3 hours, so only just got home.

Plenty of political talk during the concert. At one point Springsteen was talking about being happy the 8 year nightmare would soon be over and mentioned Iraq, losing our rights and civil liberties, wire tapping, habeas corpus, etc.. One guy in my section starting yelling over and over "this is a red state Bruce". Since i was up in the rafters I'm sure The Boss himself couldn't hear it. Because I was there sans wife (she's not a fan), I couldn't embarrass her so I just yelled back "shut the F*** up!". The guy left.

I figured reasoning with him, by asking how you could call it a red state when it was controlled by Democrats, wouldn't work.

Springsteen also promoted 2 organizations during the concert, Second Harvest Food Bank and People of Faith against the Death Penalty. They both had booths at the concert.

Oh, and did I mention the music was awesome? They played almost all of the E Street bands' last album "Magic", followed by a bunch of oldies (Born to Run, Dancing in the Dark, bad lands, etc..).

I'm sure they had nothing on whatever show Frank and Sam put up though.

Goodnight!

Indiana delegation to BlueNC bash

Michelle and I would like to thank James and Jane for their hospitality. We didn't get to say hello to everyone, which is great news for turnout, but we met dozens of you, and everyone was gracious and welcoming. James's daughter was even patient when I answered her question at too much length about how to produce pinch harmonics on a guitar. I could tell I was starting to lose her when I mentioned the overtone series. Whoops--always the geek!

It's a great way to be introduced to our soon-to-be new home state.

Michelle overheard someone wondering if we were headed all the way back to Indiana tonight. Heck no! We'll be here all week, picking an apartment.

It was a pleasure to meet so many candidates, community activists, and just plain folks. Let's do it again!

(Sorry for bringing the rotten Indiana weather with us...)

Rain, schmain.

Dog knows we need it ;) Just wait till July, when 75 and rainy is a dream.

Nice meeting you two, though! Good luck apartment scouting.

another satisfied guest!

It was wonderful to see familiar faces and new ones- welcome Branden and Michelle! - and I appreciate people's tolerance with my son, Tai. I have bought two books on Southern manners for children, but neither have made much improvement, I am afraid!

Since I have not gotten around to early voting, I was glad to meet some of the down-ballot candidates, and many will get my vote. And Brother Wayne Goodwin, if the election doesn't work out, we look forward to seeing you on cable with the "Reverend Wayne Power Hour."

In the spirit of getting along with fellow Dems, I will say that Tilden Hagan introduced himself to me and I did not bark at him. He is very loyal to his momma, and I appreciate that in a son.

We hope once our renovation is done that we can host Blue NCers out here in our part of the county.

And James - call the shelter and see if they can use the cole slaw.
Thanks to everyone for being there and having fun - I was hobbling around with a bad back but it is better today, no doubt from all the good energy of the bash!

It's been said already, by so many...

But you can never say thank you enough -- to James, Jane, Lily, Betsy, and everyone at the bash. Tilden and I had a great time, and so good to finally put faces to names. Thanks for a great Sunday afternoon!

So sorry to have missed you all yesterday, however my sons car

broke down on his drive from North Carolina back to the Naval base in Norfolk, VA.

I had to meet him up by Tarboro, get his car towed and then get him back on base before his shift began last evening.

So, instead of enjoying good barbeque, great company and the lack of slaw, I got to go for a rainy Sunday afternoon and evening drive that I certainly could have done without. Oh well, what are parents for, anyway?

It sounds like a fantastic time was had by all, and I'm truly feeling sorry for myself for not getting a chance to be a part of it all.

Don't you worry

We will figure something out. We need to start brainstorming ideas for things we can do prior to the general election.

I only caught part of this,

but I have to say: Frank sure doesn't toss many softballs, does he? I'm not saying he should, but I sure would like to listen to him interview Kay...

Thank You!

Thanks for opening up your gorgeous home, James and Jane! And of course, a big thanks to Betsy, who always does such a fab job for our blogging community.

You pulled it off!!!

And impressed my 18 year old, even. Not easy.

For me, seeing so many most excellent peeps and pols and bloggerfolk was pretty great. Many thanks to James, Jane, Betsy, Greg, etc. etc. for everything; setting it up, food and drink, everything! I'm a fairly quiet introvert 90% of the time, but I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon of reconnection and listening and watching and hugging and shaking hands. My daughter, in the midst of studying for an AP Gov't exam, expressed her sincere surprise and satisfaction with the number of judicial candidates she got to see and hear. Very cool.

Thanks!

Just wanted to add my thank you to the list. I assumed the lack of cole slaw was significant of something, although i wasn't sure what.
