Somebody convince me I've misread this. I mean, I ain't gonna vote for McSame, but this is really tempting me not to work anymore for Barack.

I think Pickens, having reached the point in life where he and all of his heirs most likely can live out their lives in luxury, has simply decided it’s time to do the right thing, to get the country he loves headed in the right direction before he dies.

So I think no one thing can account for it. Rather, I'd surmise there was a confluence of related and unrelated factors, including, in no particular order:

Mom's become, slowly, an Obama supporter, captivated over the past few months by his clarion calls for a return from the often hyper-partisan political nastiness of the past decade to the more graceful and, yes, humanely decent and inclusive, discourse of the past.
