Southern Pines Pilot recommends Jay Ovittore to voters in NC 06
Submitted by Linda on Fri, 04/25/2008 - 1:33pm.The editors of The Pilot in Southern Pines has made, in my opinion, the right choice in recommending that Democratic and Unaffiliated voters that vote in the Democratic Primary in NC-06 choose Jay Ovittore as their candidate to face Howard Coble in November, who they believe it will be "hard to dislodge".
Perspective
Submitted by Linda on Fri, 04/25/2008 - 12:02am.I lost a friend last night. The mental health system - not in NC, but in Oregon - let her down, and she jumped. Literally. Her spouse had to identify her after they pulled her out of the Willamette River.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work
Submitted by Linda on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 6:10pm.April 24 is designated as Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
Designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® program goes beyond the average “shadow” an adult. Exposing girls and boys to what a parent or mentor in their lives do during the work day is important, but showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, providing them an opportunity to share how they envision the future and begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment is key to their achieving success. Each year, development of new interactive activities and partnerships will assist us in taking girls and boys to the future they dream of.
If handled properly, this can be a rewarding experience for parents and children, and I highly encourage you to participate if you can.
But that's not really the point of this diary. What if you had to take your daughter and son to work, because your child care provider went on strike?
From NAEYC - Action Needed!
Submitted by Linda on Wed, 03/26/2008 - 12:37am.I've just received this request via email from the NC-AEYC (North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children)
U.S. Senators Dodd (D-CT) and Snowe (R-ME) have written a "Dear Colleague" letter requesting $1.072 billion in Head Start funding and $874 million in Child Care Development Block Grant funding (attached). We need to get as many Senators as possible to sign the letter by April 4th. Please contact Senators Dole and Burr and urge them to sign on to the Dodd-Snow Dear Colleague letter. Here are their phone numbers: Senator Dole 202-224-6342 and Senator Burr 202-224-3154. Share this information with your friends and colleagues and urge them to call, as well. As always, the more people the Senators hear from, the more likely they are to act.
