John Locke Foundation’s Fake “Conference”
Submitted by S Turner on Tue, 03/04/2008 - 10:29am.Imagine my surprise today to open The New York Times and see a near full-page ad for a conference co-sponsored by our own John Locke Foundation. It is the "International Conference On Climate Change" at the Marriott in New York City, which promises to "prove there is no scientific consensus on the causes or likely consequences of global warming."
Worst Person In The World*

Max Borders.
Borders is a policy analyst and media coordinator at Art Pope's Civitas Institute, and contributes to their blog Red Clay Citizen. He published a hate piece recently on our own Adam Searing, titled Mandate Mania: Does Adam Searing Hate People? Max implies that, yes, Adam does hate people. In addition, Max knows this about Adam: he lies to himself, he wants you to pay for things you don't need, he wants poor people to be uninsured (an odd accusation against the Director of the North Carolina Health Access Coalition), he hates freedom, and finally, Max knows that "Adam thinks he's smarter than you."
Adam is too much of a gentleman to rebut Borders' vitriolic post.
But I'm not.

If Paul Krugman is right and passing health care legislation should be the number one priority of Progressives, then this is welcome news.
Beware of the White Moderate

I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate (or "Independents," as they're now called). I could have written that sentence with conviction today, but it was first written by Reverend Martin Luther King on April 16, 1963.
Building A Progressive Movement

What did we learn from the week of Super Tuesday? Mostly this…if turnout matters, the Democrats kicked some Republican ass.
Just how bad was the Dems smackdown? The numbers are truly staggering. In the 19 states where both Republican and Democratic primaries were held, Democratic turnout was 73% greater.

We Are Hopelessly Racist

I wish that statement were not true, but I fear that it is.
I have found that medical studies often provide a window into the soul of our nation. Most recently, I was discouraged to read a report from a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Once again it was confirmed that there is significant disparity in the medical treatment of whites and non-whites. This particular study found that black and Hispanic patients were 25% less likely to receive narcotic medications for severe pain in emergency rooms.
Why Does Pfizer Hate America?

Once again Pfizer has slapped American taxpayers in the face. Today’s New York Times has the whole story here. Like most of the drug makers, Pfizer has aggressively used international tax havens to avoid paying United States taxes.
Marc Rotterman: Right Conclusion, Wrong Reasons
Submitted by S Turner on Wed, 07/18/2007 - 1:42pm.Cross-posted from The Progressive Pulse.
In a News & Observer Op-Ed on Monday Marc Rotterman, senior fellow at the John Locke Foundation, concludes correctly that the conservative movement is damaged goods:
“The damage to the country, the conservative movement, and the party may take years if not decades to repair.”
Modern Conservatism: Hollow at the Core.

Regardless of how one feels about George W. Bush, that his presidency will be recognized as consequential is not in dispute. In his new book A Tragic Legacy (from which I will borrow liberally in this post), Glenn Greenwald has this to say about George Bush:
