Americans for Prosperity to Fly Hot Air Balloon Over Sen Edwards’ Estate, July 9th

Well! Art Pope Boys must have nothing to do tommrow! What a waste of Art money.

From the North Carolina Chapter of Americans for Prosperity:

CHAPEL HILL – The taxpayer watchdog group Americans for Prosperity (AFP) will call attention to the “hot air” and hypocrisy in the global warming debate by flying a six-story-tall hot air balloon over former N.C. Senator John Edwards’ massive Chapel Hill estate.

AFP-North Carolina Director Dallas Woodhouse noted that Edwards is among a group of global warming alarmists that expect average Americans to sacrifice and shoulder higher energy costs, but fail to live up to their own rhetoric. The fly-over is scheduled for Wednesday evening.

“We are traveling the nation to highlight the ‘hot air’ that comes out of so many politicians’ mouths when it comes to global warming,” said Woodhouse. “Nobody better represents the ‘hot air’ in the global warming debate than John Edwards, who traveled the state proposing much higher taxes and regulations on average citizens while be built a massive energy-guzzling house in Orange County.”

According to published reports, Edwards’ home totals 28,200 square feet of connected space. The main house is 10,400 square feet and has two garages. The recreation building, a red, barn-like building containing 15,600 square feet, is connected to the house by a closed-in and roofed structure of varying widths and elevations that totals 2,200 square feet.

The main house is all on one level except for a 600-square-foot bedroom and bath area above the guest garage. The recreation building contains a basketball court, a squash court, two stages, a bedroom, kitchen, bathrooms, swimming pool, a four-story tower, and a room designated “John’s Lounge

Shifting sands

As many of you know, the North Carolina Senate has a long history of siding with special interests over the common good. That's exactly what happened when the Real Estate Lobby and Figure Eight Island millionaires teamed up last year to push The Inlet Stabilization Pilot Project bill through the Senate.

This bizarre and controversial bill would take a huge step back from the state’s existing policy prohibiting the construction of hardened structures (seawalls, jetties and groins) to protect private property. It passed the Senate overwhelmingly last year (quickly and without much notice).

One NC County Removes 1200 Abandoned Mobile Homes

One North Carolina County, Brunswick, has quietly removed more than 1,200 abandoned mobile homes from its environs since 2001. This article provides a profile of Brunswick's Appearance and Code Enforcement (ACE) program.

Honestly one of the most silly things I have seen this cycle: Pet owners prefer McCain over Obama

Pet owners prefer McCain over Obama

If the presidential election goes to the dogs, John McCain is looking like best in show.

Someone WORKING...for a CHANGE is so much more than a campaign slogan for this working man running for Congress to finally represent the interests of the people. It's the very work ethic that permeates our campaign for North Carolina's 8th District and shows in our dedicated army of volunteers and recent polling.

Cross posted (with permission) Gary Pearce on Jesse Helms

Jesse Helms was the last of the old-time racist Southern politicians.

He built his reputation on race-baiting. He won his elections with race-baiting. And he used his Senate office as a platform for race-baiting.

So you won’t find me falling all over myself to find some redeeming quality in the man.

Topic of the week: Death

A fascinating article about the unpredictable business of dying.

re: op-eds

Memo from a longtime N&O reader:
First, let me just say that Bill Kristol is an idiot who makes stuff up.
Second, could you add a regular columnist to the op-ed page who is not a member of the nearly all-male glee club from the NYT and WaPo? There are a number of good writers out there, some of whom happen to be actual women.
Third, David Broder and Mo Dowd do not count as liberal balance.
You're playing two kinds of music here — country and western. So, you've got far right, right and center-right views covered. Bravo. Where's the rest of us?

2 billion dollars for Wind Power...so that we can burn domestic natural gas in our cars...I think.

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
