Alone and Adrift in a Sea of Right-Wing Hate

Is anyone still surprised that mass shootings continue to occur? Sure, we're still horrified at the loss of life and the sheer depravity of the act, but let's not kid ourselves. Mass shootings have become a part of the American experience. We have come to expect them. We don't know when they'll happen or where, but we now have a reasonable expectation that somewhere in America, at some time in the not too distant future, someone will walk into a school, a mall, or a church and open fire. People will die, families will grieve, and those with the power to do something about it will continue to do nothing. Yes... we will all be outraged, demand action, and go for the throat on Twitter and Facebook... for a while. After a short time, we all ease back into the complacency of our lives and hope it's over... but we know it isn't. Here we dwell, in this place of denial and fear, until we are again forced to watch the horror... and we are again momentarily outraged... momentarily.

Coordinated Voter Suppression at the Welfare Office?

The Progressive Pulse is reporting today that a new analysis shows a significant drop in voter registration for applicants to food stamp and other welfare programs. Federal Law requires that welfare applicants also register to vote when they apply for assistance. Needless to say, a 50% decrease in these registrations for a population made up predominantly of those who tend to vote Democrat, is incredibly suspicious. It becomes even more suspicious when seen side by side with data from the "motor-voter" registration program.

The Fine Young Federalists: Is SB 524 an attempt at indoctrination?

At least once a week, I find myself talking to someone who has absolutely no awareness of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) at all. Each occurrence of this phenomenon brings about the same feeling of utter disbelief in me. Slowly, I’ve realized that while I have a keen awareness of the influence ALEC has within the halls of NC Government, many, many people simply do not. In truth, although few of our Legislators publicly associate themselves with ALEC, if you name a regressive bill this NCGA has passed since 2010, there’s a high likelihood it came from ALEC.

Fast Tracking Death: NC House Bill 562

While most of the civilized world would think it rare to have something so absolutely idiotic, so devoid of common sense, and so disdainful of one's own fellow human beings presented as legitimate legislation, we've become used to it in NC. HB562, however, surpasses every bar of abject stupidity previously set by this NCGA. As we all know, that's an amazingly high bar. I am far from alone in my assessment of this piece of NRA propaganda.

Senator Soucek Rips ETJ Away from Boone

Yesterday, 6/25/14, Senator Dan Soucek (R-45th) succeeded in his effort to strip Boone of its extraterritorial jurisdiction. SB 865 won approval in a vote of 66-46. The ETJ will now be controlled by the Republican led Watauga County Commissioners barring legal action that could be taken by the Town of Boone.

On Monday, 6/23/14, the House Committee on Government did not provide the bill with a favorable report by a vote of 12-15. On Tuesday, however, the bill was reintroduced in the absence of some Committee members who had voted against it and was given a favorable report.
