BlueNC Women on Wednesdays

Today will be a bit different. We have a vlog lined up and are hopeful for a visit from Mad Miss Mattie. Heaven only knows what that woman will say next!

In two weeks we are lining up some live blog sessions and I hope to update you later on the amazing women you can expect to chat with.

There's a lull in the No OLF battle, but I think most people are cautiously optimistic that this battle is won.

There's renewed intensity in the fight to save the state's mental health system. Stay tuned to Screwy Hoolie's diaries for the most up-to-date information on that front.

Last week, we had an opportunity to read a number of very touching posts from BlueNC's veteran community. It ranks as one of my favorite days here at BlueNC. Thank you all for sharing your stories.

Here is your open thread for the day. Have at it.

Thank god it's Wednesday!

I've been looking forward to this since . . . well, since the last WoW day a few weeks ago. Very happy to see your purple banner . . . and sorry for sneaking in a front-page post. I figured if I got it in before 9 you wouldn't be too mad at me.

Happy WoW Day!

Of course not!

It's a great post and I'm glad it's up there. I LOVE the teaser.

Geebus, I hate Lieberliar

he was just on CNN talking about how the Dems need to let Gen. Petraeous (how DO you spell his name?) get 'r done in Iraq. Why in the world haven't the Dems taken him to the basement and given him a blanket party? I hope the Ct. Dems do a better job next cycle and elect a real Dem. He ended his Republican talking points with "if we don't stop them over there...." Bullshit!

Blanket party?

I'm not sure I know what this is, and I don't think I want to - but I've been sick of Lieberman since he was Gore's running mate.

We've got to stop choosing vp candidates because they fit a geographic and demographic profile, and choose them because they'd make a good president, if god forbid, something would happen to the President.

For what it's worth, I thought we got it backwards in 2004.

Every military service person knows

what a blanket party is and no, it isn't pleasant. Lieberliar of all people really deserves one, I'd love to see him cry!

Speaking of women

this so called man think he and bunch of neocon misogynists should have the right to tell women what they can and cannot do with fertilized eggs in their wombs.

The audacity of those people!

Turns your stomach, doesn't it? Uggh...

And how ironic he writes, "Today, women are choosing to leave the work-force to start a family rather than choosing an abortion to stay on the job."

And then has the nerve to say, "If the debate is to be meaningful, the pro-choice people must be intellectually honest."

LMAO!

He is right about one thing, "The con game is still alive and kicking."

Sure enough is!

He says,

Third party-child care is close to becoming a government-bestowed right. The federal Family and Medical Leave Act requires employers to give parents up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, if they want it, to care for a newborn. Today, women are choosing to leave the work-force to start a family rather than choosing an abortion to stay on the job.

Third party child care is expensive(pdf): the average cost of child care for an infant is NC ranges from $7800 to $10,000 per year. For single parents, the cost of care for an infant is about 41% of their income. In NC, the median income for families with children under the age of 18 is $46,486.

So figure that a family has an infant. Mom takes 12 weeks of unpaid leave (FMLA only applies to companies with 50 or more employees, let's just give Martinez the benefit of the doubt on this one, and say that she's fortunate enough to work for a company that allows unpaid leave with a guarantee of a position upon return to work.)

Let's say, too, that Mom is conscientious about her baby's health, and has decided to breastfeed for at least those 12 weeks. So for a while, baby food and formula are not a cost factor for this family. However, nutritious food for breastfeeding Mom is definitely an issue. You can't breast feed well and eat generic macaroni and cheese and .10 a pack ramen noodles, you know? Health care is also an issue. Will her company continue to pay her health care costs, or is the family going to have to come up with those costs as well? There are also well-baby costs: diapers, whether the family decides to go with disposable or washable, are an expense. Electricity, rent or mortgage, food, insurance - all these things are a factor when you're thinking about those 12 weeks.

Then you have to consider whether or not Mom will go back to work. Can this family afford the astronomic cost of child care without assistance? Do they qualify for assistance? The answer to both of those questions is probably "no." The cost will be too high, but if they're earning that median income, they make too much money to qualify for child care subsidy.

And even if they did qualify for child care subsidy, in some counties right now in NC, there is a 4 to 6 month waiting list. What - exactly is the family supposed to live on while Mom waits for child care? Oh - and what if Mom is single? What then?

Please don't take my statements here to mean that I think that abortion - late term or otherwise - should be used because child care is expensive. I'm making these statements to show that Mr. Martinez obviously has never had reality smack him in the face. Let him come and work with some of my employees who work with parents everyday who face these dilemmas, and try to help them find creative solutions. Let him go down to his local Department of Social Services and actually talk to real women in real situations instead of right-wing wanking in front of a computer. *@&%*!

So, UNPAID 12 weeks leave

is why women are choosing motherhood over careers?

Right. Because if I can't afford to raise a child, not getting paid for 3 months will improve my financial reality. Of course.

Larry Kissell is MY Congressman

Of course!

I would respond further, but my eyes have rolled completely out of my head, and I must go retrieve them.

I have them

They rolled all the way to Chapel Hill. As well they should have.

Since I just did the taxes

Mom is stil home with the little one. We decided if we were going to have a child one of us would be at home for at least the first couple of years.

Our income on the 1040 is the lowest it has been since we got married 10+ years ago. I still don't know how we are affording this. We're not much at all above that median income you mentioned. I suppose one way we afford it is that we can no longer go out three times a week. That does help pay for some diapers.

So, exactly what are you trying to say SPLib?

Progressive Discussions My Blog

I think I was probably

I think I was probably trying to agree with LCloud. I think that was ANOTHER post that was much better the first time around but got zapped when I tried to post it. When will I learn to "copy" before clicking?

That does save on expenses!

We've gotten into a bad habit recently of being "too tired" to cook, and so we go out. We eat healthy when we go out, so we tell ourselves it's ok - but it's expensive.

No doubt there are sacrifices all families can make; but after a while, it becomes impossible to sacrifice anything else.

Random Aside

it is an open thread after all.

You know all those numbers about how much money Edwards raised from the South compared to the other candidates. The numbers from WV were insane.

JRE got about 72,000 from West Virginia. Hillary was the next closest Dem with just over 10,000 then Obama at over 8,000.

That would be West Virginia that has 2 Democratic Senators but which was won by Bush both times.

Edwards, the 2004 running mate of John Kerry, collected $72,100 from West Virginia contributors as of March 31, the latest Federal Election Commission filings show.

Romney, Giuliani and seven other presidential contenders, of both major parties, together had received $53,000 from West Virginians by that time.
