Breaking News: NYT Article Exposes McCain's Relationship With Female Lobbyist
There is a big breaking story on Sen. McCain's relationship (improper?) with a female lobbyist. I don't have time to write out more details but here is a link to the NYT article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/us/politics/21mccain.html?pagewanted=1...
This is going to be big. MSNBC actually interrupted Hardball with a special report by Keith Olberman. Hope everyone has some popcorn handy. This is going to be fun to sit back and watch.

I love it.

Here is the real question...
Let's assume for a moment that every allegation in the story is true. What does McCain do then?
If he stays in the race, he loses horribly and becomes a national laughing stock. That won't happen.
But what happens if he drops out? What happens to his delegates? Does it go to the convention? Is Romney back in the picture again?
Either way, within the week, we will see McCain saying "I did not have sexual relations with that woman..."
Which will be followed by the ever famous....
"It depends on what the definition of "is", is."
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

It just gives McCain less credibility when he tries to pull the

McCain's Macaca Moment?
I feel like this might be the beginning of something...
The article was too broad and too--I don't know--speculative to have been the beginning and end to this story. There must be something else there.
One thing's for sure, there's no way I'd be as unequivocal as McCain's been in his response. From the campaign's statement:
Never? Really? Twenty-five years in public office and he's never done favors for special interests? Really? Do you even want to put that out there for the opposition research team in the DNC to go hunting for stuff?

Can you say Keating Five?

Is this why Dems have super-delegates?
I suspected this was the original reason why the Democratic party set up this super-delegate situation. Just in case someone turns up with some story.....
I think it will blow over quickly
I find it very difficult to get stirred up about whether McCain did or didn't have a relationship with someone other than his wife. I just don't care and I'm sick of the hullaboo that these sex scandals raise.

True dat
Good point. That does up the ante, but unless they can root out more than they have thus far, I don't think the story has legs.
I'm trying to figure out the timing. It seems to me that it's to McCain's advantage to have this come out now because it will have blown over by the time of the general election. Thus I wonder if the leak was from his campaign. But I guess one could also argue that Hillary gets an advantage if this issue is spent before the general election because then (if she were able to catch up with Obama)McCain's folks won't be able to clobber her over and over and over about Bill.

It's about more than sex
It drags back out the accusation that McCain did favors for one of her clients because of this non-relationship.

what I find compelling
is the story about the woman, who went to work lobbying for interests with which she had NO experience. Now, sounds like the lobbying firm sat down with qualifications like: young, blond, outgoing, looks like McCain's wife, the younger edition - then put her to work. There didn't have to be sex - they put the bee near its favorite flower and let him get woozy over its fragrance.
Funny how the staff took action, too. Like they see themselves as his "chaperone" or something. That they even think that way demonstrates a kind of untrustworthiness. I mean, being protective of time is something that goes with the job, but "morality police" is not a job for someone who works with a 70 year old man.
I did see some claim on one of the blogs, that....
supposedly, he did a trip to Florida, paid by the company, and she happened to be on the same plane. That was in the 1990s, sometime, and this from a Repub staffer. Of course this is all speculation, and we hate to pour it on...
Pour.
Please.
