THE BUDGET NOW BECOMES LAW, DESPITE THE GOVERNOR'S OBJECTIONS.

BREAKING NEWS: THE STATE SENATE VOTED MONDAY NIGHT TO OVERRIDE GOV. BEV PERDUE'S VETO OF THE STATE BUDGET LESS THAN AN HOUR AFTER THE HOUSE APPROVED AN OVERRIDE. THE BUDGET NOW BECOMES LAW, DESPITE THE GOVERNOR'S OBJECTIONS.

The North Carolina General Assembly voted late Monday to override Gov. Bev Perdue’s veto of the $20.2 billion 2012-13 state budget.

The House was first to approve the override in a 74-45 vote cast just before 10 p.m. The Senate quickly followed with a vote of 31-10..

Despite the potential to achieve a better outcome for North Carolina, the leadership chose tonight to override the Governor’s veto of the budget, and was successful with the help of a handful of Democrats. This choice should define the nature of their leadership – a leadership that is guided by ideology, not a greater calling to serve the common good.

Gov. Perdue's Statement on Budget Override:

"The General Assembly forced a flawed budget on the people of North Carolina today. Under their budget, schools will receive $190 million less next year than they received this year; economic development initiatives to help companies create jobs in the biotech and manufacturing sectors will go unfunded; and North Carolina families will be less safe because there won’t be enough probation officers. I tried repeatedly to reach a bipartisan compromise with the leaders of the General Assembly to improve their budget, but they chose confrontation over compromise. This budget doesn’t do enough to invest in our future; it isn’t good enough for North Carolina."

It is just so crushing when the gravy train grinds to a halt. Wait till 2020 when the debt service
for our national debt, alone, will consume 100% of tax revenue. Things are going to get REALLY nasty then; but you know the piper never plays nice when it's past time to pay.

Six Democrats voted for the override: Reps. Marcus Brandon, Guilford; Darren Jackson, Wake; Marian McLawhorn, Pitt; Bill Brisson, Bladen; Dewey Hill, Columbus; and Jim Crawford, Granville.
