Burr, God and Caesar

There are so many things wrong with this short story that it's hard to know where to begin.

ASHEVILLE - U.S. Senator Richard Burr will host a federal grant workshop in Asheville to focus on improving access to federal grants for faith-based and community initiatives.

The workshop will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Reuters Center at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Burr will deliver opening remarks to workshop attendees.

The workshop is part of Burr’s North Carolina Economic Development series to make the state more competitive in the federal arena. The seminar is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested. North Carolina faith-based and community initiative organization personnel and those who wish to attend the workshop should contact Emily Cranford at (202) 224-3154.

What the heck is an conservative creature like Burr doing teaching people to grovel at the public trough? And more to the point, what's this "faith-based" business all about? It's bad enough that religions get preferential tax treatment in the US, but now we're spending taxpayer dollars to train them to master the art of squeezing federal dollars for their faith-based programs?

Sometimes I feel like the world has turned upside down. But don't expect the neo-cons and the Libertarians to call Burr on this stunt. They've long since given up on the concept of separating church and state, just as long as the church in question happens to be a Christian one.

Asheville has a very healthy pagan community

I think I'll put a bug in their ears about the grant opportunities awaiting them, and have them turn up to ask Brrrr for some help.

That would be interesting

I wonder how it would go over if there was a Muslim community that wanted to create a madras for inner city kids?

Madras

I don't mean to be too picky but I think you mean madrassa

I think it would be great PR

if there was a Muslim community that wanted to create a madras for inner city kids

Actually it would make a great video to announce it, watch people get all worked up about it, then capture their reaction as they realize it's all coming from Abercrombie

Nice shorts!

This particular madras would be poifect for da hood, whereas a madrassa wouldn't go over very well at all given the propensities of the Asheville city police.

Maybe it was just a Freudian slipper.

Chew on this pagan political bone Senator Burr?

But don't expect the neo-cons and the Libertarians to call Burr on this stunt.

You don't know the real Libertarians. They will storm the meeting and hold Burr's spokesperson hostage until he commits himself to support Michael Vick's Barbarian Church of Pagan Gladiator beasts with Senator Burr as bait.......Afterwards, they will march on neo-con headquarters and seize George Bush retarded brain to prove that stupidity does harm innocent citizens....

I think we should stir it up a little.

You know they're out there. Let's fluster old Dickie Burr.

Hmmmm...

Muslims, Pagans, and Buddhists will certainly want to know about this...

I'll see what I can do.

James, your name came up over at Scru Hoo

on Gordon's post about this.

This is what Senator No wrote:

James at Blue NC was also throwing out a red herring in my opinion by attacking Burr for going to the federal trough. If Burr never mentioned how to get aid for people, he would be attacked for that too. James created a lose-lose situation. It’s not Burr’s discretion who is awarded the grants, he’s simply the messenger, especially in the minority party.

(FYI the "Senator" first came on strong at Scrutiny over my "unhealthy obsession" with McHenry. Initially I thought he worked for McHenry (because house.gov is the source of 99 percent of my previous negative comments or emails) But it turns out, he may just not have realized the truth about dear Pat. Since then we've had several extensive comment thread conversations with him much like this one. )

News of the 10th district: See Pat Go Bye Bye,

Lose lose?

That's silly. This issue isn't about lose-lose, it's about hypocrisy.

Elected officials who say "well, someone's going to get the money so it may as well be us" are hypocritical to a fault. I would never criticize Richard Burr for being true to his principles . . . though I would certainly challenge the principles themselves.

More to the point, this post was mostly about separation of church and state.
