Close comments on the Pansy Thread?

What say you: Should we close out comments on the pansy thread, or let 'em roll?

do what you think is best, James.

I won't vote.

I kind of like the science experiment part

but it does run the risk of 'splodin'.

I find I am compelled to attempt to have the last word

in that thread. I realize that it seems trivial to most folks. It's not to me; and my jaws have locked on this one. I'm sorry. You should probably close it.

Ya mean you want me to save you from yourself!

Heh.

Hahahaha!

An intertubes intervention.

Don't let her type again.

(It is a slur.)

Done.

The midnight bloggers carry the day, so to speak. Case closed. For now.

We made the NY Times

You closed it just in time James: Blogtalk: ‘Pansy’ Power

But for the most part, the wars waged on the blogs look a lot like this one at BlueNC, where people basically bickered about whether or not they should have recognized the sexual connotation in the schoolyard taunt.
But if half the people don’t even recognize the word as a slur, does that diminish its potential resonance – or make it a finely-honed line of political code? We’ll leave that one to our colleague William Safire, and to you.

You're welcome.

When was the last time BlueNC made the NYT?

Missed connection

Still bummed I didn't see you at the B'Bash.

I saw you running around after your little one

And I did get to talk to her a bit. She's a sweetheart. Next time!

I missed her too!

And I only had to run after my little one a few times. :)

Next time throw a rock at me, Linda.

You've got it.

I was standing next to you during the great Frank and Sam show. But I couldn't speak. I could barely breath.

Guess I better open 'em back up. Just in case.

Aren't the interTubes amazing?

I agree - some of the stuff

I agree - some of the stuff was getting trivial. But I liked my comment on the definition of bigotry -- right as you closed the thread -- because the use of the word "bigot" to describe the Governor is one of the reasons I got riled up about the thread in the first place. And now that ugly word is sitting on the front-page describing someone who is NOT a bigot.

The front page will change fast enough.

And as for Equality NC's endorsement of Easley -

Of course Easley infamously received the endorsement of Equality NC in his re-election bid, then in a debate said he'd sign a marriage amendment if it hit his desk, so why should we be surprised.

Not a bigot!

You want the last word on this thread too? Or should I keep responding? :)

:)

Nope. I just wanted to be sure you knew about that last thing, really. It pissed me off at the time, and still does. I'm done. When we've made James close a thread and Greg find us at the NYT, I think it's enough chaos and mayhem for one 24 hour period.

Well..

I never got to toss in my two cents earlier, but here are my last minute thoughts.

First, I have never heard the term pansy used as anti-gay. I actually called several of my gay friends and they agreed.

Second, because I am not gay, I wouldn't know. Andrew Sullivan was offended, but he is pro-Obama (as am I), so his opinion should be taken with a grain.

Finally, on closing a thread, that is a big step. I have taken down my own posts because things got ugly, but as a moderator, unless the thread/comments became libelous or threatened the integrity of the community, I would be hard pressed to shut it down.

I know.

I've never closed comments before. But I figured they'd pick up here soon enough. And see? I was right!

Whew.

Glad we can at least see the comments. I'm in exams and felt awful unproductive when all evidence of an evening's hard work disappeared. :)

Sorry. I totally hit the wrong button.

They're back open again. Knock yourself out!

:)

Why would you close the thread?

There aren't that many threads that come along where people are posting back and forth like that. Isn't this what the community is supposed to be about? And we made the NY Times, to boot! If you don't want to read the thread, just don't read it. But doesn't mean you should keep others from being able to read it.

He's thinking of closing the thread because

we're starting to sound like a bunch of nuts, that's why.

Sometimes, being in the NYTimes isn't a positive thing. Sometimes it's a "lookit how INSANE the political dialogue has become" story.

He closed it last night to save me from myself.

And it is insane.

You've been here more than a year

so you already know what this community is about. You also know that sometimes things spin out of control. Last night, the pansy thread came close to slipping over that invisible edge. While I'm happy for Mike Easley to be painted with the pansy brush, I don't want for BlueNC to be over-identified with the issue in a way that is either (1) counterproductive in terms of community-building, or (2) a distraction.

All that said, I appreciate your question because it gave me a chance to clarify the issue just a bit.

James

PS For the record, some of us don't have the luxury of not reading threads. We are responsible for the integrity and effectiveness of the site, and we make lots of close-calls every week about what works and what may be out of line.

OK, gotcha

I'm worried less about how our discussion appears to outsiders, but I do not like it when folks start attacking others and making judgments based on views or opinions expressed on a thread, so you are certainly in line then to close it off.

I know it's hard to monitor a message board, so keep up the great work!

What happened to the original posts on this subject

The original post is still there as is your comment. In fact the thread has spread to 2 pages which means new comments may be on the second page which you have to click through to. When you do, new comments are not highlighted. It's a quirk of the software though you can manually set the number of visible comments.

You folks are too hardcore....

You guys have nothing on Karl Rove... I thought this would be a nicer forum. Good luck with everything.

And you claim you're from Paterson.

Pffft.

And Helms begat Reagan...

Arguably, Ronald Reagan's Helms enabled win in the 1976 NC primary was all the encouragement he needed to try again in 1980, setting the stage for the Reagan Revolution and synergistic escapades like this one...

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
