Hate soup

When you're married to a professor, you get the opportunity to meet all manner of college students. As they pass through our house and our lives each semester, I get the chance to talk and listen and watch and wonder about the state of academic pursuits, up close and personal.

In recent years, a new breed of student has emerged in growing numbers, cheered on by one of the Puppetmaster's sideshows. I call them the Whiners because they spend so much time pissing and moaning about how the mean old faculty doesn't let them spout their conservative bullshit unchallenged.

It turns out, I'm not the only person taking issue with these College Republicans. The American Conservative today skewers the anti-intellectualism of today's campus reactionaries in an article you really should read.

Now College Republicans parade in shirts proclaiming “George W. Bush Is My Homeboy.” The campus Right has almost always been more activist than intellectual, just as the wider movement has been more political than cultural. But where once students were at least familiar with the names Kirk and Weaver, or Mises and Nock, today they look to Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter for guidance. They’re little acquainted with the wisdom of the contemporary Right’s founding generation, and it shows.

The piece provides a rare glimpse of introspection by right wing intellectuals, and it's worth reading just for that. What it misses, though, is an honest analysis of how the Republican party has devolved into the Party of Greed, Torture and Perversion. Though criticizing the campus conservatives, the writer fails to acknowledge that this miserable state of affairs was completely predictable. Republican leaders all across America have been in the kitchen cooking hate soup for years. They should be not surprised to find that their next generation of right wing zealots has been lapping it up.

I call it"Bitch, moan and whine club".

I'm going to have to use that one.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

as a college kid

As some of you may or may not know I am taking my final semester from state off to campaign. All I have to say is I dont need to read an article to find out about these idiots.

The "intellectual" freedom movement is complete and total crap. It is a backlash against the fact that professors force students from both sides of the aisle to back up their bs. Some of us take it and learn and become better people. These people whine to mommy and daddy that they arent being told they are correct.

Its just too bad some of these people will make public policy desicions in the future. Its very very scary.
