The irony of the newsmodel, whose job depends on her sex appeal rather than her grasp of facts, asking the questions was astounding. CNN's defensiveness about media's responsibility for anything was right on the surface. The statement "We're a very screwed up country when it comes to sex." neatly summarized the Jane's findings but the money quote if you caught it was "I had a TV in my bedroom when I was growing up." You wanted to nod and say, "Yep, we can tell."
It was wonderful watching Jane on this show. (CNN website) To me it appeared she used her understanding of media sound bites and TV style to format the valuable information she has to share. (she's a Pro) All to often subject matter experts appear on TV and are taken advantage of by producers and interviewers by cutting them off or playing devils advocate too aggressively. (ex. o'reilly, collbert, stewart, etc.)
I think Jane's suggestion that TVs should be taken out of young children's bed rooms was awesome. Not just because its a good idea but because the message was being delivered on TV. The interviewers response was awkward and a bit telling. Isn't a cardinal sin to suggest people not watch TV on TV? :) When in reality if TV execs would take action on Jane's research their business would improve and society would benefit.
and put together more programming encouraging better behavior. Too often they are the examples that the young and impressionable emulate. I had hoped after the first school shootings that these "trend setters" would address things like cliques and bullying in schools. Instead we get The OC. Hollywood has a knack for making anything into entertainment, surely they could make leadership and mentoring "cool".

That's basically the theme of the "talks" I have with my kids about sex. (At this point, these "talks" really are more lectures since they listen and don't really say anything!)
Having both a son and a daughter, I've thought a lot about these issues and how our society attepts to socialize our children and force them into the traditional gender roles as well as push other values and attitudes on them, all to make money.
It's a shame the sexualization of young girls not only starts so early but also continues to the degree it does with adult women. You would think that as more women go to college and enter the professional world, we'd see a decrease in sexualizing young girls but we haven't, likely due to the fact it's a big money making industry. I don't expect big for profit corps to take any level of being socially responsible serious, so, doubtful this will improve.
Great interview---I admire the work Jane is doing!
This woman brings up female athletes, Jane might want to know that female volleyball players have been pushing for years to wear something more athletic and comfortable, like Board shorts, or spandex shorts, and the leaders of that league have said No.
They want the sex appeal of hot women leaping around in bikinis for marketing.

They didn't use her name in the teaser
Somehow I knew it was Jane, though. I had to leave the house before she came on. I'm sorry I missed it. I would have taped it.

That was the money quote
as far as I'm concerned. Right on the mark.
She has such a wonderful calm demeanor
It was an excellent interview. Is the study/book available yet?

The study was the cover article
in Pediatrics (the Journal) last month.
I hope Mrs. A will join us on Women on Wednesdays
