The Mainstream Media absolutely loves the idea of ups and downs. Whether it is the N & O’s pretty arrows, the dunce hats and cowboy hats of the Indy, or the classic Cheers and Jeers; everyone loves to give accolades and hate.
Well, today I am going to try and do the same for North Carolina Politics.
I am going to borrow from Stephen Colbert, because no one does this better than him. So, without further ado, I present…Tip of the Hat/ Wag of the Finger
Tip of the Hat to Joe Hackney for protecting our constitution from bigots. It is early in his term as speaker, and already Speaker Hackney is using his power to open the process, while still keeping the crazies from taking over.
Wag of the Finger to the Senate Leadership, specifically the three co chairs from Appropriations (Walter Dalton, Linda Garrou and Kay Hagan). While the House opened up the budget process, the Senate kept the lid on tight, and came up with something that looked like it had been drafted by a bunch of Republicans. Two of the three are either expressly running for or rumored to be looking at promotions in 2008. Not a good start on that process at all.
Tip of the Hat to Richard Moore for his recent comments on the debt in the Senate Budget. Normally people running for Governor tread lightly, and he came out early on the issue.
Wag of the Finger to Skip Stam and Phil Berger, on their efforts to turn the Constitution into little more than a passing fad. They were elected to change the laws not the foundation of our state government. I hope they realize that at some point soon.
Tip of the Hat to resolutions passed by the legislature addressing OLF and the Wilmington Race Riots of 1898. This is a good first step in the long, long, long road towards racial equality.
My biggest Wag of the Finger to Governor Easley and Cameron Hooker Odom. I doubt I need to expand on that one.
And finally, my biggest Tip of the Hat to the members of BlueNC who have called and emailed their legislators about issues, and a double Tip to those legislators who have written back and told us what is going on, why they are voting the way they are, etc. Its greatly appreciated.
