Much Ado Over 2.8 Cents

Sorry if this becomes a bit rantish, but why the hell is there this much noise over 2.8 cents? For those of you that do not read North Carolina newspapers, websites, or watch local news, the gas tax is set to increase 2.8 cents a gallon on the 1st. This change is due to the fact that part of the gas tax in this state is pegged as a percentage of the cost of gas in the trailing 6 months. Since prices were higher these last six months, the tax is going up.

Since that time, there has been a push by some legislators to call a special session to cap the tax. And many news outlets have picked up on the story. The most recent one is the Jacksonville Daily News. And their estimate of the total cost of the tax to family over a year: $15.

Now why would money be wasted on calling a special session to stop this minuscule amount? Gas prices are higher now than typical, but they should be even higher. Gas should cost consumers what it costs the environment and the other residents of this state. I have sympathy for individuals that need to drive to work or school because of the lack of public transportation in this state. And the gas tax does nothing to improve public transportation since the funds are used to build more roads.

However, the high the price of gas, the less that people drive. The less people drive, the less pollution and congestion. It is simple logic. Maybe too simple to have any of our politicians understand it.

Those that agree with me regarding this issue, can e-mail the governor at to let him know that you are against the special session as a waste of money.

The election year is looming.....

and they can then claim they voted to reduce taxes. This would mean maybe a $15 savings per year and a loss in millions for our roads. I'm sorry so many Dems are leading the way on this one.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

Clinton again

As I have mentioned here, there, and everywhere - Bill Clinton talks about in his book how he lost the Governorship because he agreed to a small gas tax increase. Never underestimate simplicity of this message. Also, it is something we should learn from.

We should be pushing the huge profit increases by the Healthcare Industry while at the same time there are huge increases in monthly premiums. But, lord forbid, our centrist State Legislators would have to support some form of Healthcare For All.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

I wish I had your way with words, Lance. Maybe it'll rub off on me.

It was the number of links in your comment that triggered the spam filter. I marked them as "not spam" and hit "publish," but I don't see the comment here and I'm not sure why. Anyway, I think I've set up the spam filter to always let you through. Let me know if you continue to have problems.

EDIT: Ok, the comment is on this post. (I deleted the duplicate.) Thanks for putting all of that in one place! You should be able to link directly to the comment using this URL:

I remember my very first troll (on my personal blog). I didn't feel like a serious blogger until that day. Ah, sweet memories.
