Gay-brained

Uh oh. Really bad news for wingnuts. The few who actually believe in science will soon be tossed from the big Republican tent. And those who believe in the infallibility of god will have to trade in their tickets to heaven. Because it looks like the truth is finally out: God makes people gay.

WASHINGTON - Lesbians’ brains react differently to sex hormones than those of heterosexual women. An earlier study of gay men also showed their brain response was different from straight men — an even stronger difference than has now been found in lesbians. Lesbians’ brains reacted somewhat, though not completely, like those of heterosexual men, a team of Swedish researchers said in Tuesday’s edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Biological basis for sexual orientation?
In both cases the findings add weight to the idea that homosexuality has a physical basis and is not learned behavior. “It shows sexual orientation may very well have a different basis between men and women ... this is not just a mirror image situation,” said Sandra Witelson, an expert on brain anatomy and sexual orientation at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. “The important thing is to be open to the likely situation that there are biological factors that contribute to sexual orientation,” added Witelson, who was not part of the research team.

It'll be interesting to see how fundamentalist theocrats respond to the reality that their god - the big guy behind creationism - is actually responsible for making people gay. What in his name was he thinking?

Easy! They and the present Bush agenda associates will rush
out and buy stock in companies that make MRI medical machines!

Nothing like a bunch of church ladies x-raying the heck out of
the church membership?

They'll be freaking

The radical right is just going to freak. They will freak out and then they will quickly pull themselves together in order to present their own "research" supposedly "disputing" that research's claims. We all know, however, that the "research" of the radical, religious (not really) right (not that either) is nothing but a bunch of half-cocked, unscientific religious rhetoric filtered through some organization with a scientific name (anyone every heard of NARTH?)

I had not heard of NARTH

But I just spent a few minutes browsing their website. It is a perfect example of how the internet can be a tool the ignorant can use to convince themselves that the world agrees with them.

NARTH is...

nothing more than a tool of the radical, religious right. Like you said, they have convinced themselves of their own "scientific" "knowledge" and "proof" that homosexuality is a choice and now they are spreading their "evidence" (read: propaganda) to others. What scares me most about groups like NARTH is the harm that might be done to LGBT and questioning youth, especially those youth with non-understanding parents. I'm concerned about those youth who get sucked into their parents' plans to "change" their kids through so-called "reparative therapy." Groups like NARTH promote reparative therapy as a way to "cure" homosexuality. It is all bull and although we would like to think that people are smarter than to believe any of there "evidence" or "studies," the truth is that they aren't.

It's really sad.

Makes me wonder how many teenage suicides this NARTH is going to be responsible for before all their funders die of old age, alone, alientated from their children because they're such cold, judgmental screw-ups.

Can you imagine dedicating your life to proving that pleasurable sexual activity among consulting adults is somehow so wrong that stopping it is the most important thing in the world? How f*cked it that?

Just more evidence

This isn't really new-- there have been studies over the past decade, numering in the dozens, that show sexual orientation to be biological.
But I'm glad yet another one is coming out, particularly in a year where several states are considering same-sex marriage bans. The evidence is adding up.
