Heath Shuler Appearing With Elizabeth Dole At Right Wing Celebration, Why?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketI'm still waiting on an answer from Shuler's team regarding his inexplicable and deeply disturbing plans to legitimize North Carolina's most partisan and least truthful Republican group.

If you haven't gotten an answer either, there's always the telephone...

Damn...how did I miss this?

I read everything...least I thought I had. I better scroll back and see what else I missed while on vacation. I'll give Heath a buzz tomorrow.

But! But! It's about free speech!

Perspective, folks. Perspective.* Dr Frank

I thought that you just discover that Art Pope is your enemy? It is a Art Pope event pure and simple and the old camel under the Tent tactic with the Pope machine. Good to see you and Ed love Art and the republican estabishment boys.

LBJ once said this about his enemies. He said it was best to keep them in the big tent and let them piss out instead of them pissing in on him. Either way, Art is pissing both ways on Heath.....

This is what I wrote Heath on 18 April.

Dear Rep. Shuler,

The meeting in Raleigh you have decided to honor with
your presence may be based on misinformation, vanity,
or a real desire to bridge the gap between Democrats
and Republicans, but please consider this:

1. They are extreme in their right wing leanings and
have no desire to bridge the gap with you.

2. You will be exploited and presented as one who
undserstands the soundness of thier philosophy.

3. After the event, your image at there party will be
repeatedly displayed all over as proof of the
disentegration of the Democratic party.

4. Since the Republican Party is not the majority in
Congress, you have nothing to gain in that respect.

You are known for being a man of conscience. Although
fullfilling a personal goal by attending, you may be
hurting your fellow Democrats who supported you. What
about them?

Respectfully,

MARSHALL ADAME

2014 U.S. Congress Candidate NC-03

D'uh.

He probably agrees with 95% of their platform. blah blah blah, something about reapin' and sewin'.

What?

I do not completely understand your comment; try making full sentences next time.

If what you are saying is that Shuler agrees with the Pope crowd, you could not be further from the truth. Shuler has some conservative positions on social issues. But other than the stem cell vote, he has been 100% on board with the Democratic agenda. And the Pope crowd does not care about social positions; they care about the minimum wage not being raised, and it was Shuler who helped lead that fight.

Anyway, I know Shuler has lost at least one supporter with this stunt.

I took it to mean

that when you aim to the right in order to take from the Republicans, you get what you get. That doesn't mean that we don't stay on Heath to perform as a Democrat, but we oughtn't act surprised when turns out to be no Barney Frank.

No one thinks he's Barney Frank

maybe Barney Fife?

In any case, he is what he is and our job is to reinforce his progressive tendencies and push back hard when he veers toward the dark side.

zackly

and well said.

It's true, it's true, it's true.

Also remember that freshmen Congressmen are the most vulnerable of all incumbents. If he wins in 2008, and he so wishes, he will probably hold on to the seat indefinitely.
That said, I think he should show his "fair and balanced" streak by attending a NC Justice Center conference. Or, a BlueNC bloggers dinner. How about someone plan and invite him to that!

No DFL

He never said that.

He's simply saying....oh never mind.

It is a slap in the face to all good liberals/progressives who worked so hard for Heath, to have him attend a Civitas event. I don't care what his intentions are, it is a slap in the face. Making that statement doesn't mean I would prefer Charles Taylor. Pointing out the irony of the situation doesn't mean blculbre would prefer Charles Taylor. Goodness gracious.

GOOOD Morning Blue!

OK, called the 828 # and talked to Shirley, (what a nice person) and voiced my opinion that Mr. Shuler should not attend this event. Had the original post up and used a lot of talking points posted by A and ScruHoo. She assured me that it would go to the DC office and that Mr. Shuler would be informed. I asked her to let him know that BlueNC and Screwy Hoolie are writing about this and that although we are very proud of the actions he has taken while in office (except for his stem-cell vote, of course), we are very concerned about his attendance at the Civitas Convention.

Boy I hope he gets enough of these notes and phone calls of concern that he rethinks this and decides not to attend!

Psst....

Guys, there are Republicans in Shuler's district who voted for him.
Also, Heath is capable of talking to people without agreeing with them.
It's something you have to do in the world occasionally.

Shhh... don't tell Anglico. ;-)

Well said.

I agree re: Civitas

They are not legitimate. And every time I see the Pope Foundation quoted in the N&O, I write and complain. but I don't see any problem with Heath appearing at this event and speaking the truth. As long as he handles it right, I don't have a problem with it. If he goes in there and, for example, makes the case for Environmentalism from the perspective of an evangelical Christian, then he may do more good than you think.

He'll be at JJ - there is a reception for him. You should come and bend his ear.

Shock

I meant to merely point out my feelings toward people being shocked by Shuler's action. Not to stop anyone from making an effort to prevent him from going.

Please don't confuse my aim.

Are you going

to supply my family and me Larry signs again or is that still your job? My old one was shot and had to go.

Lovex7

The Question Remains

Why is he going? He's not answering any queries about the event, so we all have to make up reasons. It would be much easier and more transparent if the Shuler team would let us in on the thinking behind this seemingly ridiculous, stoopid move that legitimizes one of the nastiest organizations in NC.

It's not like a bunch of 11th district Republicans who voted for him are going to see him standing next to Pat McHenry and think, "Oh, he's just a Republican in disguise, voting for all that pro-labor stuff as a front."

There's something else at work here. We just don't know what it is.

I'm calling again.

Just Got Off the Phone With Shuler's People

They're going to get a statement together for us, but the gist of it is this: By attending the fringe-Republicans gathering they will demonstrate a willingness to talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime with the intention of focusing on common ground and trying to devilify the Democratic Party brand with the foamy Norquist-lovers, that if they can see a Democrat and hear one talk without the filter of the media, they might come to think of Democrats as human beings instead of three-headed beelzebubs.

I disagree with their position and let them know as much, focusing on legitimizing this nakedly partisan organization that masquerades as a 501(c)3 nonpartisan group.

So there's more coming from the Shuler folks, but that's the general idea.

Scrutiny Hooligans - http://www.scrutinyhooligans.us

I wish him luck.

But am not optimistic. They're using him.

Yeah, his people have really missed the boat

on this one. I don't know if it's sad or stupid. Do they not know or do they know and don't understand what it means . . . either one is kind of pathetic when you think of the salaries floating around a congressional office.

Thanks Screwy & Schuler People

It's not the 'Why' - I kind of figured that was why -

demonstrate a willingness to talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime with the intention of focusing on common ground

It's the where.

And how about that 501(c) position? How is it that they can continue? Is no one watching the fort? Or have regulations changed so much that any ol' group can receive that designation?

Who's job is it to monitor those things?

The IRS monitors it

and things are acutally tighter than they used to be. They're skating on the line, but not over it. Having Shuler at their event really does lend credibilty to their 501(c)(3) status.

As the director of a 501 see three, I can give information on issues. I cannot take positions on candidates, or even parties - if I'm speaking as the head of my organization. Loss of the not-for-profit status means loss of my grant funding, and loss of my donors ability to deduct their donations on their taxes. So I have to be very careful which hat I'm wearing when I advocate on issues.

Honestly - I don't know how they do it.

He probably wouldn't mind. You can ask him on Thursday if you don't get an email off any earlier.

bad thread! no cookie!

I'm unhappy that I have to respond in this thread, but sure, feel free to use any graphics I produce. I'm flattered.

Here's an idea y'all, lets put our money where our mouth is. Let's make an ActBlue or Paypal account called "Heath Shuler is too good for Civitas" and all chip in $5 a month for the next year. $5 x 25 people x 12 months = $1,500. Then next year we contribute the money so that Shuler can do a mailing to communicate directly with the more conservative members in his district, rather than going through a bad organization. We don't have to like the political sitiuation to recognise that it exists.

Does a BlueNC PAC exist?

What a great idea, Jerimee

No PAC and there shouldn't be

For reasons we've discussed before. Having a BlueNC PAC could present hurdles in our political advocacy. We can accomplish the same thing by holding online fundraisers for candidates of our choice without any sticky state or federal campaign finance issues cropping up.

ActBlue will not set up a holding account similar to what you've described. You either give the money to Heath or you donate to the general election fund for that race. The only "draft" accounts can be for presidential races.

Proud NC Noob

You're saying that a PAC could compromise the blog? I didn't know that

But I suppose there is no lack of way to financially promote progressive policy and leaders, just a lack of people stepping up to do it. No doubt BlueNC has helped some people to get to that level of involvement.

I wasn't thrilled about the PAC idea

but about the idea of BlueNC helping Heath find real and honest conservatives to talk to rather than this ridiculous phony group.

They Do Exist

real and honest conservatives to talk to

Too bad all the ones I know live in other states. They'd still talk to him, though. I mean, hey, they talk to me.

Statement from Shuler's Communication Director

This just in from Andrew Whalen, Communications Director for Congressman Shuler:

"Generally, the idea behind it is that as Democrats we must speak to all people whether we agree with them or not. We can change no minds if we don't make our case. As I said on the phone when you mentioned the Republican "Machine", us standing across the street and railing against the machine does nothing, but by crossing the street we can have an effect on that machine. If there is one young person there whose mind opens up after hearing Congressman Shuler speak, we've had an important effect.

Just as the purpose of your blog, Blue NC, and any other number of blogs is to communicate ideas and influence people, that's what the purpose of this speech will be...to communicate and influence."

And so it goes.

Scrutiny Hooligans - http://www.scrutinyhooligans.us

If Andrew reads this, I will repeat what I said above.

I would prefer that Heath Shuler attend a Western Methodist Conference than the Citivas. There is nothing wrong with reaching out to his constituents that are conservatives, Republicans, pro-birth, or NRA members. However, there is something wrong with giving legitimacy to an organization whose sole goal is to attack the Democratic Party, its principles, and its goals.

Why didn't I think of this

I know somebody already asked this

But who is the guy on the right?

And this is just a lesson to all the people who volunteered and gave in NC-11 instead of NC-08 ... just sayin' ;-)

Uncle Sam

i was going to use the Statue of Liberty, but I thought good old US would work.

Maybe the media will turn out in force

with all the publicity we're generating for Civitas.

And maybe the media will see a boatload of Where's Liddy? milk-carton signs in and outside the meeting room!

Once again

If that is his intention, he might as well go over and make a speech at Republican Party HQ about why they should vote for John Edwards. It will have about as much of an effect.

"Keep the Faith"

Sorry, but crossing the street

doesn't seem to be needed here. Like Robert says, he can have the same effect by going to the Western Methodist Conference. All this just makes me very wary of the good congressman. I'm also wondering what all those people in Western NC think now that they worked so hard to get him elected.

I'm feelin' pretty queasy

He never said he wasn't pro-birth. When he voted against stem cell research I didn't feel like he was doing anything different than what he said he would do. But this is just ugly. As everyone has said, there are so many other "nice" conservative groups that he could meet and greet. This makes no sense.

We're left with the mantra, "He's better than Taylor." And the fantasy that he would find some staff that is more aware of what's going on outside their little insular world.

Besides that, no matter what case he makes, the power of editing makes whatever case they want.

Ill advised.
