It's crunch John and Elizabeth Edwards today!

Although I haven't actually met all the regulars here I've come to think of us as an extended family. We squabble occassionally but usually in a good natured way. And, we all have the common dream of living in a state and a nation governed by folks whose first priority is what's best for "we the people." There hasn't been much of that type of governance going on in America or North Carolina for a long time and we're each in our way, and collectively, fighting to take back our country. I want to talk with you about two members of our family who need your help. I'm going to ask you to put your money where your heart is, and and ask you to do all you can to help them help us take our country back. More below the fold.

This is a call to action...and it's for John and Elizabeth Edwards...and for us!

I first met John Edwards in 2004. Nan, who had been working in John's behalf for months and is the finest judge of character of anyone I know, told me John Edwards was for real and that I had to go meet him. I said OK...I knew I was going to meet him, and I was prepared. Much of who I am, and many like me, has been defined by events I had no control over. I wanted to talk with him about that. In my hands I had a newly purchased translation of Carl Von Clausewitz's treatise "On War." When I shook his hand and looked in his eyes and after we had talked for a few minutes I knew I had met someone special. I knew he was for real. He took the book. I know he read it. We've spoken several times since. I'm energized by his presence because I walk away renewed by his energy and sincerity.

I didn't get to meet Elizabeth until later. It was a simple twist of fate. Nan and I were working an event for the Edwards to be followed by a book signing by Elizabeth at a Raleigh book store. Elizabeth wanted pictures taken for and with all those who came to the signing...and the Edward's camera was broken. Lucky for me...I had my camera and tripod...lots of batteries...and stood next to Elizabeth for the next 3 hours taking pictures. We got aquainted.
Lucky me! The first of many encounters.

Fast forward to Wednesday night. We were in Chapel Hill, privileged to be attending a party for John and Elizabeth. Everyone was subdued but hopeful.
They arrived, and as usual, people clustered to say hello and shake hands and hug. I stood back...watching. John worked his way into the Great Room and when he saw Nan sitting nearby he reached down and pulled her up and hugged her and they talked for a moment. I saw Nan's eyes dim and her legs go slightly limp. Elizabeth wasn't far behind. Why she would choose to do so is beyond me, but she turned and walked straight to me and gave me a hug and I damn near dissolved. I'm only tough on the outside.

Both John and Elizabeth spoke later in the evening and here's what I want you to know:

They are going to be OK. And, they are hopeful and committed to taking our country back. John is committed to winning the Presidency and to changing the conditions of the poor, the marginalized, and those in the middle class who are being left behind by the practices of our current government. He will bring decent affordable health care into the reach of everyone. He will protect, defend, and further the progress women have made in our society. He understands the interconnections between war, disease, poverty and the destuction of our global environment and will address those problems both here and abroad to the betterment of all.

Now...he needs your help. On March 31st the 1st quarter funding drive for all candidates will be over and the results reported shortly thereafter. It's crucial that the Edwards campaign funding report shows that people aren't just talking but also contributing. Hillary already has $11 Million in her Senate campaign coffers that she can transfer, and she and hubby Bill are twisting the legs off people to get more. I've heard...not from The Edwards campaign...but others who know, the Clintons are telling big donors they damn well better not support anyone else...particularly Edwards. They're scared of him...because he's real and they know he's going to win if he can stay financially competitive.

So, I'm asking you to give all you can before March 31st and to talk with your friends and tell them now is the time to commit. Call the Edwards campaign office at 919-636-3143 and use your credit card to make a donation today. We are doing well...we just want to show the rest of the folks out there we're going to win.

If John and Elizabeth can make the commitment for us they're making, particularly as they've demonstrated over the past few days...can we dig a little deeper and not be afraid to ask others to do so too?

It's important! Please! Today! Every dollar counts. If you can give $5, $50, $500, or $4600 (the max one person can give) please do it today. Tell your friends to do the same. It's now...or maybe never.
Call (919) 636 - 3143 and rec this so it stays up awhile please!

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

John edwards will move America forward

I have made another donation to the Edwards Campaign....Not because I have money
to burn...I do not...but America and her wellbeing is my responsibility and yours too!

You can blog the night away about your support for John Edwards,...and that is great...
so don't get me wrong, but in todays America with the perception of a political marketplace where, seemingly, elections are bought and sold in eletist backrooms, John Edwards has emerged to prove
that premis wrong. A man from the people, a man for America, a man for our time.

I know everbody tries to avoid saying it, but the inspiration, which eminates from the
character of John Edwards, cannot help but remind us, who were alive then, of the feeling
of greatness we felt in the person of John Kennedy.

A great leader is not only heard, but felt by those who encounter him or her.

Well I heard John Edwards and something in me told me that this man was for this time. I am supporting John edwards with my voice, my feet, and my money, however meger it may be.

Just do it!...You can ....You will be better off for taking a stand today.

America needs you today...All of us need you today. Support John Edwards.

I don't know anyone who has money to burn, nor do we. But it's one concrete way we can fight. The Edwards campaign office lights are ablaze into the night every night and the people working there are mostly volunteers...but the bills have to be paid and John and Elizabeth have to travel and it all costs an immense amount of money.

Every dollar we give is a dollar that shows we care about the future of our country.

You can donate online too!

I donated again last week!

Great post, Stan. I know what you mean about "dissolving" when Elizabeth hugs you. Aside from her brilliance, she is such a supportive person, not only of the netroots, but so many people. Truly generous.

Thanks Amy

Good Catch...I'm glad you put the link up. On line or by credit card is best so the funds get there...

I was on board

with Edwards before this. Between the press conference yesterday, and this video from later that night, I would walk through fire for this man.
