Larry Kissell: The Real Deal

The Southern Dem has been singing the praises of Larry Kissell for weeks and months and I've found her enthusiasm contagious. But tonight I got the meet Larry himself, as did more than a hundred other folks from around the Triangle. And I'm here to tell you: Larry Kissell is the real deal. He's smart and quick and honest and as nice as the day is long. He has a warm sense of humor, a strong handle on the issues, and he's just the kind of person North Carolina needs as a representative in Congress.

Our fundraiser was a smash hit -- especially because of the enormous contribution of David Price and his wonderful staff. They really drove the turn out and spread the word. People kept coming and coming and they all had a great time from what I could tell. Plus it didn't rain! I'm not sure what the final fundraising tally was (we should know tomorrow), but the turnout and energy were off the chart. We were expecting 70 people, but the real number was around 120. That is, 120 excited, energized and committed people who Larry can count on for help and support. I've never been more proud to be an Orange County Democrat.

I'm beat, guys.

But I did want to say special thanks to the many BlueNC people who were able to come out and support Larry.

I was reminded of the post a few days ago in which we wondered whether or not blogs make a difference. I can tell you this for certain, without BlueNC, this event for Larry Kissell probably wouldn't have even happened . . .

. . . certainly not at my house.

:)

Yay!

Congratulations on what looks like a spectacular event! I can't wait to hear more.

I'm sorry I couldn't make the trip from Charlotte, but I'm definitely going to the Concord event on Friday.

I am sorry that I missed it

My wife had a coworker in town, who we entertained for the night. Looked like a good time.

Thank you, A

It looks and sounds like it was a wonderful gathering. I know Larry appreicates it. What a great response right here before the end of the quarter!

Thanks for the hospitality

That was a real standing room only crowd.

It was great to finally meet Larry. He is clearly committed to the race, knows the issues, and has the right positions on them.

And thanks to BlueNC - I would not have even known about the event wothout this site.

Here, here!

The atmosphere was excellent, the food was exquisite, the energy was palpitable. Larry didn't give a long speech, but he spent a lot of time meeting and greeting one-on-one. I can't say enough about Larry, I really think we have a great candidate in the 8th. I hope Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, the OB, and others will step up to the plate and raise funds for this important races.

The Republican funding will come from sources out of state, from corporations out of the state that make money outsourcing jobs out of the country. Larry has a real grassroots groundswell going on here, and each of us needs to keep it rolling.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Well said/done

"without BlueNC, this event for Larry Kissell probably wouldn't have even happened . . . certainly not at my house"

too right.

You're demonstrating how we bloggers can translate our voices to create events that make an immense difference.

Youda!

On behalf of all North Carolinians

who will soon be able to list their state's Representatives without saying "Robin Hayes," I thank you for hosting this event!

Lance

I believe you are in Alamance county, any chance of organizing a pig picking with the local democratic party? $25 a head to elect a democrat?

Robert, that's not a bad idea

But it ain't happening because of me. With the bar studying and spending several coming weekends in Atlanta looking for a house, I'm in no position to do the organizing. I can put you in touch with our precinct chair -- he's young and energetic, and might want to help out.

I have a fundraising plea going up at DKos

for Brad Miller and Larry Kissell. I will have it up around 10am. Please head over to recommend. We need as many as possible in a short amount of time to get it recommended.

Thanks.

If ya'll have a minute

the Charlotte Observer has given us a great opportunity to share a little love for Larry.

Check out the editorial in today's paper titled "Is This The Congress America Deserves?"

As the 2006 mid-term election approaches, here is what our Congress has been doing for us:
• Debating a flag-burning amendment, though nobody is burning flags. (It failed to pass.)
• Debating a "death tax" bill to sharply cut estate taxes. The taxpayers who'd benefit most are the super-rich. (It failed to pass so far.)
• Debating a motion for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, though it would not have been binding on the president. (It failed to pass.)

Here's what our Congress has not done:
• Anything to curb our soaring national debt.
• Anything about Social Security, Medicare and other entitlement programs that, left unattended, in time may bankrupt our nation.
• Anything to solve our growing problem with illegal immigration, barring a last-minute meeting of the minds between the House and Senate.

Congress has many capable and committed members, but as a group they've compiled a record of neglect and incompetence that would get them fired by any self-respecting business.
But not by the American people. If trends hold true, 99 percent of congressional incumbents have raised so much money and done so many favors that they'll be re-elected. Apparently America has the Congress it wants -- and deserves.

I know we deserve a lot better! In fact, we deserve Larry Kissell!
