BlueNC has been expending a lot of speculative energy trying to figure out who'll run against Elizabeth Dole in 2008. Now a report from mountain cultural and political superhero, Ashvegas, gives us a possible candidate.
Ashvegas: "David Young for U.S. Senate. Sources tell us that Young is considering launching a statewide bid for Senate. There's nothing anywhere near official yet, and Young's not talking. But he's said to be mulling it over.
{silence.}
Yeah. We know. Who is David Young, you ask? A few basics:
Young is a 47-old who has long been on the scene of mountain Democratic politics. He's serving his fourth four-year term as a county commissioner. Young is a businessman. He co-owns an Asheville travel agency with his wife. He's a family man. Leigh Young is his better half, and the couple has three daughters.
He is a Democrat. Young's molded himself a bit on the conservative side, especially with his interest in boosting business in general, and in economic development. But he's no Heath Shuler.
Young ran for the 11th Congressional District seat against U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor back in 1998 and took his thumpin', like all the Democrats who ran against Taylor until last year. So what makes this guy think he can run a statewide race and win in two years? We know that Young has connections. He's serving on the UNC Board of Governors, a political plumb that's difficult to land. He's working his way up the seating chart on the N.C. Association of County Commissioners, and will be president of that statewide group in a year."
Ashvegas has his ear to the ground, and I trust that his sources aren't just whistling Dixie. I hope Young runs and that he declares soon. This might get other fence-sitters motivated to begin organizing their own runs.

Thanks for this, Screwy
I'm glad to hear some serious chatter about who might fill the Empty Wig's seat. Your final comment is right on the money.
Going down the list
It's good to hear a name finally emerge, even if he's not one of the 'powerhouse' names that gets thrown around. Plus he doesn't wear horrible looking glasses!
David Young?
I could be wrong, but placing our hopes on a candidate rumored to be interested in running who doesn't have money, lost to Charles Taylor, doesn't have state wide name recognition, and whose highest political office was county commissioner seems a bit like grasping at straws.
In 2004 Elizabeth Dole spent $13.7mm to beat a former chief of staff to the president of the United States who had a personal fortune and a famous North Carolina name. What Erskine Bowles did not have when he faced Elizabeth Dole was fire in the belly and plenty of charisma.
It should be added that 2004 will be NOTHING like 2008. But I just have a hard time getting excited about an undecided travel agent from Ashville.
Unfortunately, that this man is thinking about running is all the news we have to report in what should be a winnable race this time around. I wonder, has anyone been talking to Jim Hunt?
I'm 56 years old. I moved to North Carolina five years ago. The previous twenty-five years I spent as a resident of Chicago's north shore and before that Wisconsin, Utah and California. I live in Moore County. My Congressman is Howard Coble, my State Sen
I take this more as a...
sign that at least someone is running and maybe it will move "others" into the race. I think he faces a huge up-hill slog, of course, so I hope we get Easley or Miller to run, but if not, go Young go.
If he can get the CC caucus behind him, that will give him connections in every county.
If he gets the generic "Democratic" vote, that gives him 40% to start with.
If he has good connections with UNC, that might get him another chunk of change and voters.
All in all, I'm thankful for any Democrat that chooses to run, instead of sitting back and talking about it. That said, I still hope that Easley or Miller run for the seat.
Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Hunt has said no
Easley has said no. They could be liars, but I' inclined to take them at their word.
As Robert comments, I don't think anyone, including Screwy, has said anything about placing hopes on anyone.
What's interesting to me is how we're now in an all-day-every-day campaign mode. We have Mike Munger already out and running to get on the ballot for Governor as a Libertarian candidate. Perdue and Moore are clearly (and regrettably) going to duke it out for the Dem nomination. Larry Kissell has already declared for Congress. Not to mention all the hubbub over president ... Tommy Thompson, Vilsack, Clinton, Edwards, Obama, McCain, etc.
I don't much like this kind of year-round campaigning, but it looks like it's here to stay. And every campaign always starts with rumors.
I know they have all said no...
but the silence is deafening. If someone doesn't step up soon, they miss out running against her current votes. As she votes against issues like Stem Cells and minimum wage, who will be in front of the cameras making sure North Carolinians know it?
Certainly not the traditional media.

I say go for it
Being from Asheville myself, I'm all for a local guy (in fact, a local guy from any part of NC) going for the office. We've already seen a lot of change in our country in the past few months and I think that change will continue into 08. Dole hardly ever visits her "home" state, choosing instead to send representatives who don't seem to know what they're talking about (See the Brock Log http://brocknet.net/WordPress/?p=1529). Why not have a guy born and bred in NC? He does have statewide contacts, as the article says he 's on the Board of Governors AND the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (not just on, President-elect for the latter). We know Jim Hunt's not running, and there's no other strong Democrats who have thrown their hat in the ring. Everyone now seems to be content where they are. Instead of trying to find the reasons he WON'T win, let's put our support behind a candidate like Young and find the reasons he SHOULD win. Again, this country's ready for change -- we (as the Democratic party) should be ready to lead that change.
P.S. Mr. Pence, Dole beat Bowles in 2002, it was Burr who beat Bowles in 2004. And if Heath Shuler can beat Charles Taylor in 06, I think the Dems have a better chance of winning the Senate too.
