GOVERNOR COOPER REMOVES ALL CONFEDERATE STATUES FROM CAPITOL GROUNDS: Raleigh’s tallest Confederate monument began coming down early Sunday, a gesture aimed at healing more than a century of racial division. Crews brought a crane, cherry picker and flatbed to disassemble the 75-foot obelisk on the Capitol lawn, which has stood for 125 years. As they worked, a crowd gathered on Hillsborough Street, cheering and giving thumbs-ups to the workmen. Crews removed the Wyatt Monument and the Women of the Confederacy statues Saturday morning. “Monuments to white supremacy don’t belong in places of allegiance, and it’s past time that these painful memorials be moved in a legal, safe way,” Cooper said in his statement.

RALEIGH CROWDS IGNORING MASK REQUIREMENT, BALDWIN NOT READY TO ISSUE CITATIONS: Crowds on Glenwood South this weekend are mostly choosing to ignore Raleigh's new mask requirement. Crowded restaurants and streets last weekend on Glenwood South were a major contributor to Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin's decision to create a mask requirement. However, the crowds have returned this weekend -- without masks. However, Baldwin said it's too early to enforce stricter rules, like citations. She said she believes retail centers are getting the message, but it’s hard getting younger people in entertainment spaces to wear masks. "We are continuing to work with Glenwood South and work with the Downtown Raleigh Alliance to try and work toward compliance," she said. Crowds near Tin Roof Bar and Hibernian Pub were seen not wearing masks--or practicing good social distancing.

ELON PROFESSOR ASSAULTED BY PRO-CONFEDERATE KNUCKLEHEADS AT GRAHAM PROTEST: As a result of civil unrest associated with Civil War monuments, the mayor of Graham has issued a State of Emergency for the city, initiating a curfew that took effect at 9 p.m. on Saturday night. According to officials, a professor from Elon University was assaulted during an anti-racism protest outside the Alamance County Courthouse in downtown Graham. Two members of the counter-protest group supporting the Confederate monuments were arrested and charged. Christopher Overman was arrested and charged for assault on a female, while Chadwick Hightower was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, according to a release from the Graham Police Department. Both of the men have posted bail. Megan Squire, who teaches computer science at Elon and is most known for her work researching right-wing extremist groups on the internet, said she was punched by one of the members of the Confederate gathering. According to a post on her Twitter account, Squire said her husband was slapped twice. Her husband, Anthony Crider, also works at Elon University as a professor.

TRUMP TRIES TO WIN THE CONFEDERATE VOTE BY TALKING ABOUT "HERITAGE": At one point Saturday night, he touted steps his administration has taken to improve the lives of black people in the country, including signing a criminal justice reform bill and passing tax cuts he said would benefit black workers. But for much of his time onstage Saturday, Trump doubled down on inflammatory comments. He attacked several Democratic women of color, in one instance accusing Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) of “telling us how to run our country.” The congresswoman, who came to the United States when she was 12 as a refugee from Somalia, is a United States citizen. In repeated comments about “heritage,” the president also embraced those defending the controversial tokens of Confederate history. “The unhinged left-wing mob is trying to vandalize our history, desecrate our monuments, our beautiful monuments, tear down our statues and punish, cancel and persecute anyone who does not conform to their demands for absolute and total control,” he said. “This cruel campaign of censorship and exclusion violates everything we hold dear as Americans. They want to demolish our heritage so they can impose their new oppressive regime in its place. They want to defund and dissolve our police departments.”

TRUMP'S TULSA RALLY FLOPPED, LEAVING HIM FURIOUS AND DEJECTED: President Trump and several staff members stood backstage and gazed at the empty Bank of Oklahoma Center in horror. Mr. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence had canceled plans at the last minute to speak at an outdoor overflow rally that was almost entirely empty, despite claims of nearly one million people registering for tickets to attend the event in Tulsa, Okla., and the president’s false boast of never having an empty seat at one of his events. The president, who had been warned aboard Air Force One that the crowds at the arena were smaller than expected, was stunned, and he yelled at aides backstage while looking at the endless rows of empty blue seats in the upper bowl of the stadium, according to four people familiar with what took place. Brad Parscale, the campaign manager who had put the event together, was not present. Exactly what went wrong was still being dissected on Sunday. But a broad group of advisers and associates acknowledged to one another that Mr. Trump had not been able to will public opinion away from fears about the spread of the coronavirus in an indoor space. And they conceded that myriad polls showing Mr. Trump’s eroded standing were not fake, and that he might be on course to lose to former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., the presumptive Democratic nominee, in November.

I know those two professors

Good people. Smart just doesn't quite cover it. And of course that scares the bejesus out of white supremacists who thrive in the shadows on the fringe.
