NC Conservation Network alert: offshore drilling bill

Just got this heads-up in the (e)mail:

We have some breaking good news on North Carolina's response to the Gulf oil disaster and an urgent request for you to contact your state representative in the next 24 hours.

A House committee in the state legislature just passed a bill (S836) which would:

- ensure that oil companies like BP are fully liable for damage to our state from offshore oil spills, including if oil from the Gulf of Mexico disaster hits NC beaches,

- require the state to have an updated plan to respond to the possibility of oil reaching North Carolina beaches this summer, and

- strengthen state law to prevent an offshore drilling catastrophe off North Carollina's coast.

This legislation is headed for a final House vote tomorrow, so please send a quick message to your state representative to vote YES for S836

If the link doesn't work, it's my fault not theirs, so keep trying. Here are links to their website and Facebook page.

Follow-up alert, clock ticking

We told you yesterday about an expected vote on a bill (S836) that would make clear that BP is liable if their oil hits NC beaches and would strengthen state law to prevent an offshore drilling catastrophe off North Carolina's coast. There's still time to take action, but please do so today as we expect it will get a vote on the House floor around 4:00pm.

Already done...

Hopefully we'll have an update on this later today or tomorrow.
