Via Greg Flynn, we learn of ABC's report that 4 NC lawmakers appear on the list of "duplicate" voters that the NC GOP has been railing about. You remember, NC joined the red-state coalition that uses bad data from Kansas's secretary of state, Kris Kobach, a leading vote suppressor, to attempt to show that voter fraud is rampant.
The group Democracy North Carolina presented documentation Monday that it says shows four state lawmakers have duplicate voter registrations in other states.
NC right wingers screamed about the thousands of people who shared names and the hundreds of people who shared names and other attributes, claiming it "proved" rampant voter fraud. Of course, cooler heads, including election experts, noted that the numbers were relatively very small, that such "duplicate" information is common across states and that most cases were probably explained as errors on the part of poll workers. To date, not one single case of voter fraud has been proven from Kobach's alarmist numbers.
"The hysteria about voter fraud is being used to justify restrictions that do not improve the fairness or security of our election system. They just reduce the access to our voting system for people who are occasional voters," offered Robert Hall with Democracy NC.
And now we find out that Charles Jeter, Duane Hall, Rodney Moore and Cliven Bundy supporter Ron Rabin are on that list. Rabin in particular has been one to join in the GOP hysterics about "proof" of voter fraud.
Democracy NC said Democratic representatives Duane Hall and Rodney Moore, along with Republican representatives Charles Jeter and Ronald Rabin, all have active voter registrations in other states with the same first and last name and same date of birth.
So did these legislators commit voter fraud? Of course not. And neither did anyone else on the stupid list that they've been using to rationalize their voter suppression law.
[Democracy NC] said it is using the examples to make the argument that there are thousands of North Carolinians who moved to the state, and simply forgot to cancel their old voter registration or who just happen to share the same name and date of birth as a voter in another state.
Democracy NC said Republican claims of widespread voter fraud that helped pushed through tougher voter laws in the legislature last year are ridiculous and irresponsible.
