Friends on the left are shaking their heads in disbelief at the absurdity of the Palin pick. That is a mistake. Because friends on the right are welcoming the choice as a galvanizing move that celebrates the power of blissful ignorance. In the finest tradition of George W. Bush, they say, voters have proven again and again that competence is not a valued quality. In two short months we will know the character of the American electorate. I won't be one bit surprised if we choose the foul-mouthed lying, adulterer with the Palin rocket in his pocket.

Impact on Independents

That is the key group to watch. I think we are going to see numerous articles in the media questioning McCain's judgement and temperment over the next few weeks. This should have a big effect on Independents and moderate Republicans who are tired of the bad decisions and rash temperment of the last eight years.

That is the point that we should hammer home, that the selection of a less than fully vetted Palin demonstrates that McCain lacks the judgement and temperment to be President. Do we want another four years of bad rash decisions?

It wouldn't surprise me if Palin did a change of heart, or ...

McSame dumps her quickly. Watching some of the morning shows, I was really surprised about how they kept this issue going, compared to a couple months ago with McSame's lobbyist girlfriend disappearing in two days. It's almost like someone in GE (NBC) decided McSame made a big mistake. They might be going through the same thought process many of us are going through right now. Will we elect the oldest person ever, for president, with Palin next-in-line?

I'm not always logged in when I view the site--when I'm not logged in I can't see anything but an "Access Denied" notice, including the post that says you have to log in to see stuff. Just FYI.

Big Republican Diane Rheme on right now

with all her republicant friends talking about how qualified Palin is and that we just don't get it. It's almost amusing seeing the r's race to support Palin. The last speaker just reinforced a statement I keep hearing them say over and over (ya know until it's true) that Obama and Palin have about the same amount of foreign experience.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Progressive Discussions

This gave me a chuckle last night...

I caught this on TV last night... CNN's Campbell Brown giving McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds a hard time with Palin's "experience."

Who does Tucker Bounds blame for this humiliation?

I wonder: who does Tucker Bounds blame for this humiliating interview, Campbell Brown or John McCain?

McCain Worst Draft Choice since Zipo Smith?

The worst 1st round draft choice in NFL [National Football Leaque] history was a running back from Tufts University who stood 4 foot 9 inches tall and weigh 125 lbs soaking wet by the Cleveland Browns to replace the greatest Running back in NFL history Jim Brown when he retired for a movie career.

Zipo career ended suddenly on his first running play in the NFL when he ran into a LineBacker name Dick Buckus for the Chicago Bears.

He was driven into the ground so deep by Mr Buckus, that they just cover up the hole and held his funeral on the spot.

To this day! Cleveland Browns fans say the Republicans made the draft choice since Jim Brown was a democrat.

I wouldn't start gloating just yet.

While McCain's VP pick looks like a train wreck in slow motion to many of us, pro life conservatives are circling the wagons. Dobson, for instance, has issued an endorsement of Sarah Palin, despite the fact the Focus on Family website has statements disapproving of working women.

Sarah Palin states she is a Christian pro lifer. That seems to be the only thing that matters to some voters. Forget about the investigation she's under for abuse of power or charges of croynism with her hiring practices or her flip flop on the bridge to nowhere...she says she is a "Christian."

Hopefully, more rational minds will prevail and as was said above, McCain's dangerous and reckless judgment will become more evident to voters.

The "experience" conversation is a distraction and the Obama campaign needs to get away from the conversation. If you ever find yourself in the position of educating the electorate on the difference between years on the city council or as mayor of Wasilla and years in the state legislature or US Senate, you're already losing the battle.

If John McCain, et al, feel that she has enough experience, by golly, judge her on that experience because there's plenty there to chew on. In fact, McCain has already set-up the narrative, first by placing such an emphasis on national security credentials prior to selecting Palin and second, by introducing her as a reformist.

Just off of what I've read this weekend, during her illustrative political career:

  • She's been governor for 18-months and is already being investigated by the State of Alaska for abuse of power.
  • She's been Commander-in-Chief of the Alaska National Guard, yet the General of the Alaska National Guard admits that he and Palin play no role in national defense activities and the governor is not briefed on situations.
  • Governor Palin was the DIRECTOR of indicted Sen. Ted Stevens' 527 and raised millions for him.
  • Governor Palin was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it. And while she can no longer build the Bridge to Nowhere, she's still spending the money to build the Road to the Bridge to Nowhere.
  • As mayor of Wasilla (population 6,700), she hired a lobbyist to secure $27 million in federal earmarks over 4-years (a modest $4000 per person).
  • As mayor, Palin cut taxes but ran up a $20 million long-term debt (sound familiar?).
  • Governor Palin may or may not have been a member of Alaskans for Independence Party. (AIP says she was, she now says she wasn't). AIP's platform? Secede from the union (or at least force a vote on it). AIP's motto? Alaska First -- Alaska Always.
  • And, if you liked Obama's Wright problem or even McCain's Hagee problem, you'll love Palin's Kalnins problem.

That's the experience she brings to the ticket. That's the experience that McCain and company have vetted (and they continue to insist that they've thoroughly vetted Governor Palin), which only suggests that this is the person that John McCain has exercised his wisdom and judgment to select as the Vice President of the United States of America. And this is the ongoing display of judgment by the man who desires to be our next president and this is his desired second in command.

Stay tuned.

Insightful comments

Send it off to the Obama campain.

How much weirder?

Seriously, did the McCain camp even try? Apparently Pawlenty and Romney went through a vetting process that took 1-2 months. The team of lawyers showed up in Alaska just a day before they selected her. And because they didn't talk to a single person they missed a lot of "fun stories" like this one, from Time:

Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." The librarian, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire her for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

"Keep the Faith"

"Keep the Faith"

For weeks they sowed discord about a Hillary revolt

If I were a better placed ratf*cker, I'd be talking to Romney's people, Lieberman's people, Ron Paul's people, Tom Ridge's people, Tim Pawlenty's people about the possibility that, whisper, whisper:

It ain't over yet. Hedge your bets. Play your cards close to your chest. Don't get your feet too dirty with this Palin business. He wants to dump her. They're re-vetting. Keep mum. Don't talk to the press. Watch John for the signs. Let your advisors know that they need to keep your schedule open.

Do you know how close you were? He was two minutes from picking up the phone. Then this. Senator McCain knows that you're the only guy who can help us out here. He'll be calling.

We don't want floor demonstrations or anything, but feel free to let folks know that there's chatter. A show of support will be necessary at short notice if we choose to place your name into nomination. You might want to line up a few influential delegates just in case...

How are things at home?

Agreed Frank.

McCain's made a decision to placate the GOP's cultural conservatives at the expense of the GOP's fiscal conservatives and national defense folks. We should force him to live with his calculation or to abandon his decision and face down his own party. And at this point, he's raised over $10 million from the cultural conservatives with her on the ticket, so he'd be hard pressed to pull a last minute swap.

New Obama Ad: "Change"

I love it.

I love the ad. I hope it plays in NC.

Already saw it on the air here.

Saw it on CNN today.

I don't know.

I feel like making some random phone calls to people and seeing what they care about. I saw the block of ads over at Swing State today and they seemed to be about nothing but gas. I'm also not sure how well the More of the Same message resonates anymore.

I don't think that Senator McCain doesn't care what's going on in the lives of Americans, I just think he doesn't know.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Oh that's nice!

Good to hear some new voice talent in these things.

Totally different, lighter, easier tone; beautifully simple and bold.

Love it!

Wonderful. Could someone please post it at TAP?

Still boggling

Reading the blogs and news today is an exercise in insanity ... with grown adults trying to pretend as though there is actually something thoughtful and honest in McCain's Hail Mary pass to a know-nothing Christianist who says god wants more pipelines built in Alaska.

If America's shrinking conservative movement can convince itself that Sarah Palin is an appropriate choice for vice president by McSame, it can convince itself of anything. We have officially moved into the Twilight Zone.

Jesus Swept, so you can come clean.

I say we start a movement

To draft Santa Claus for President. And the Easter Bunny for Vice President. They're just as qualified as McCain and Palin.
