Rampant sexual harassment in Mark Meadows' staff office

And he knew all about it:

According to a report in the Huffington Post on Monday, Meadows was told by multiple women about his chief of staff’s behavior in March. The report says Meadows barred West from his D.C. office but reassigned him to an office in the 11th congressional district, and continued paying him; West has since been released with a “sizable severance.”

The report says that payments made to West after the complaints were filed—a full of rate of $38,750 for the period of April 1 through June 30, and continued payment through August 15—could have violated House Ethics rules. The Foundation of Accountability and Civic Trust has asked the Office of Congressional Ethics to investigate West’s severance payment.

Gee, thanks. Send him back home so he can harass a whole new set of women, all the while drawing a six-figure salary from taxpayers. Many of whom are also women, by the way, which adds one more layer of WTF to this story. And once all the threads from this debacle get unraveled, Meadows himself may be the subject of ridicule:

The Huffington Post reports on some other strange transactions between Meadows and West. West ran against Meadows in the 2012 GOP primary, hinting at a character flaw that West said made Meadows unfit for office, but never discussed publicly. When it was clear his own campaign had failed, West endorsed Meadows and Meadows began making payments to West out of his campaign account three weeks after the general election.

There's a word for that: Blackmail. Even if whatever West is holding over Meadows' head turns out to be mundane and no real threat to his political career, the payments will be. Film at eleven.

Local reporting on this issue

I find nothing about this in the Asheville Citizen-Times online. Last night WLOS-TV (Asheville) mentioned the severance payments, but did not mention the sexual harassment that I could find.

It is amazing how little actual reporting

our local papers offer since they started laying off professional reporters and restructured to be more like blogs

Meadows did make the Citizen-Times today

Good Lord

Are they completely clueless? And somebody needs to ask each one of those Republicans who signed the "good job!" letter a few weeks ago if they consider providing cover for a sexual harasser part of that "good job!" category. Guh.

Meadows for Speaker?

McCarthy out. Ryan reluctant. John Harwood (NBC and NYT) speculates Hensarling or Gowdy.

What about Mark Meadows?

From my lips to God's ears....

And now Ellmers' name comes into play

Rumors that she and McCarthy were/are having an affair.

Been hearing that

for a while, but now I'm hearing she led the push to get him bumped from the short list for Speaker.

Spekalashun is he cooled off before she did, which in Ellmers' mind is a Capital offense...

As much as I dislike her as a

As much as I dislike her as a congresswoman, I hope the affair talk isn't true. She has a husband and son and I just think about how that would affect them, especially the son.

I'm a moderate Democrat.

Update from the Asheville Citizen-Times

John Boyle's column.

Mr. Boyle is falling all over himself to not get the voice of the mountains newspaper in hot water....

I'm certainly willing to listen, and if we think the allegations are credible, we'll move forward. But we're not going to reprint a blog story that relies exclusively on anonymous sources and seems freighted with political motivations.

At least he is reporting that the Citizen-Times staff is seeking comment from Meadows' office, West, and current and former Meadows staffers.

Had to fix the link

For some reason, it went to a job opening site instead of the column. If it changes again we'll know they meant it to happen.

As to Boyle's opinions about whether the sexual harassment accusations have merit, he seems to have overlooked the fact West was sent back to NC to get him out of the DC office. That may not be a smoking gun, but it does have gunshot residue on it.
