The Real Racism of Illegal Immigration (political cartoon)

I do agree there is a large component of racism in the illegal immigration debate, but it is not about "keeping out the Mexicans" or preventing people of color from coming in the country. I think CNN's Lou Dobbs gets a raw deal on this issue. I try to watch his show every chance I get, and I have yet to see his position be that of a racist. In fact, I think it is the other way around... let me try to explain this.

The argument FOR illegal immigration is most often phrased like this, "they are doing jobs Americans won't do." In the wake of the Swift Meat Packing Plant arrests, we saw a large number of employees that ARE American in these jobs and company officials admitted they will be hiring local American residents to fill the positions of the illegal immigrants that were arrested last week. So the phrase "jobs Americans won't do" is unjust, unfair and and a flat out lie. The company complains "Americans won't keep these jobs long, they move on to something else." Well of course. Who exactly wants to work for 30 years in a meat packing plant?

Once upon a time, I was driving through central North Carolina on a Sunday afternoon when the oil line in my Honda Civic, with 300,000 miles on it, ruptured. Of course, the oil light bulb was burned out so the engine turned itself into one large aluminum nugget. Stuck in the middle of nowhere I walked up the road to find a phone (this was before the days of cell phones everywhere) to call AAA. The first place I came to was a chicken processing plant that was closed for the day. I finally found the plant's single security guard and I had to follow him on his rounds before I could use the phone. I was so repulsed, disgusted and horrified by what I saw in that plant, I didn't eat meat for two years.

So yeah, the Swift Company is right, their employees will move on AND WILL THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Those here illegally must move on because they, in the case of the Swift employees, were using stolen identities. If you are using one of those, you need to get a new one frequently because the person you stole it from is going to get a very demanding letter from the IRS wanting to know where the taxes are for those wages the illegal immigrant garnered.

Why is it so easy for mostly White owned companies to hire illegal aliens? My belief is skin color. They hire them, make them work for lower wages, in dangerous jobs and abuse them while they are there for the same reason this has always happened in America - their skin is brown. People of color has a long history of being abused in the workplace and I think this is just a continuation of it.

Corporate America will use any excuse to explain away their actions, they will embrace falsehoods to boost their bottom line and do it on the backs of people who are in no position to protect themselves from predators.

It's getting old saying....

One of your best. You just keep getting better and better. I love your cartoons. Consider me a groupie.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

I'd like to see how their production fares.

say six months from now, IF they are able to find residents to work there, I'd like to know how many stay and what the effect is on their business.

Personally, I hope I'm not eating something that comes through plants like that by buying local.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Packing had a walk out of sorts (it may have been a union organization thing or an INS instigated walk out, I can't really remember) back in the late summer. I do remember reading an article about it in the newspaper, though. Apparently, Smithfield had to increase the hourly wage they were offering by a dollar (not double, mind you) to lure in AMERICANS to replace the exiting workers. That's why I remember the article. It shocked my sensibilities that all they had to do was increase wages by ONE measly dollar to bring in American workers.

All the employers who employ illegal immigrants claim they do so because, "We just cannot, try as we may, find Americans who will do this hard/manual/dirty work ..."

Nobody asks those employers to FINISH that sentence.

The rest of the sentence is "... for what we're paying so we can maximize our profits leverage our resources."

Of course, in some industries, another benefit of hiring illegal immigrants is plain and simply because you know you can take advantage of those workers and no matter what you do, they'll never report you. They may go look for better work after they learn a little more English, but they will never report anything they see to the authorities. Never. No matter how unsafe or inhumane or untenable the hours or working conditions or animal treatment, no illegal immigrant is going to pickup the phone and make an anonymous report. Ever. For obvious reasons. And that is a huge benefit of having an illegal work force. Plus that extra dollar an hour the employer gets to keep. :\

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Oh, yeah, that is true

I guess you could say then that free-trade is all about taking advantage of them over there so we don't have to take advantage of them over here.
