Senator Kay Hagan supports repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

This morning Senator Hagan held a conference call with members of the media to discuss her trip to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq as well as her other activities over the spring recess. She stepped out of a Senate Armed Services Committee meeting to speak with us and the first question to her was about the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Senator Hagan responded that we have a volunteer military and she feels anybody who is willing and able to serve should be afforded that right.

When pressed further as to whether she supports Senator Lieberman's bill Senator Hagan emphasized that she supports repeal of the policy, but fell short of specifically endorsing Senator Lieberman's bill.

I'm supporting turning back that bill. The department of defense is committeed to repealing the outdated policy and Secretary Gates has announced that he will conduct a study to determine how best to implement the repeal.

More on the conference call later.

Some good comments from Kay

Now let's some action.

Yup...keep the calls and emails flowing

We don't need a five year pentagon study... :) Let's emphasize a timely repeal.

Can't blame Kay for not jumping on a specific bill

though I know some will. She does support the underlying cause though and that's more important to me. No telling what Lieberman's bill will look like once it has made it through committees in the Senate and House..been voted on by both and then pushed through conference....

Now is a good time to keep up the calls and emails making sure the Senator knows you support the timely repeal of DADT.

Good news...now time to call and write.

Tt's time to repeal it now. We've got gang members, felons and skinheads serving while qualified, experienced law-abiding gay and lesbian service members are still getting kicked out. It's time to help ease the multiple tours of duty by bringing in the thousands who are willing to serve and are rested and ready.

I've Tweeted and Facebooked this post.

Thanks Pam....this is just a crack in the door

We need to push it open. If (once it has been poked, prodded and mutilated) the Lieberman bill actually expedites the repeal of DADT I'd like to make sure Senator Hagan knows we endorse her voting for the bill instead of waiting for the results of what could be a very lengthy Pentagon study.

I couldn't agree more

back during the primary debate I believe she took a similar position as she took now. And that is something I like to see, candidates stating their pro-equality positions more often, but in the end what matters the most is how they act on those positions.

We need to jump on this moment and tell Senator Hagan that we want her to support repealing DADT without waiting on a study.

As I recall, and this may be outdated, the House version said do a study for a year then repeal DADT, whereas the Senate version of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act says repeal DADT right away and the study can happen concurrently.

We all need to make the call and send the message saying that we support any effort to repeal DADT immediately, without delays for a study, which includes the Senate version of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act as it currently stands.

Terrific News

I am with the Senator on this one. If we are going to stay engaged in these terrible conflicts (neither of which I support), we should, at the very least, allow and any all brave, patriotic Americans that wish to serve the opportunity to do so.

Thanks, Kay!

Talk's cheap: from Obama to Hagan

Obama said he supported DADT repeal too.

It wasn't included in the Defense Authorization bill he submitted to Congress.

You're right that I'm going to criticize Hagan for not signing onto S3065 (Military Readiness Enhancement Act).

Even 2/3 of Tea Partiers support repealing DADT -- not to mention a majority in NC favor repeal of DADT.

Senator Hagan, sign on to the bill. It's not that hard. You sign on to bills all the time.

Have Senator Levin (Chairman of Armed Services) attach the DADT repeal to the Defense Authorization bill now before the Armed Services Committee YOU SIT ON.

Otherwise, this is just a bunch of talk.

Senator Hagan, you were sent to DC with an overwhelming majority, the time for action is now.

Who knows the real deal???

Is there ANYONE out there that knows why DADT has not been recinded or is not being put on a bill, like username is mentioning here??????

ANYONE ????? It is mindboggling to me. With all the support from every imaginable part of our political spectrum and from the majority of our country's electorate...WHATSUP????

ANYONE??

Good.

About time. Past time.
