South Carolina Primary Returns Open Thread

It's quiet around here today. I'm collecting some information from different sites on the primary in South Carolina. Some polls are quiet while others are seeing very high turnout. It's chilly and clear, so weather shouldn't be keeping folks at home.

It will be interesting to see just how accurate or inaccurate the polling numbers are in South Carolina.

Time will tell.

NPR saying "record turnout"

partly because of Saturday voting. All elections should be extended over multiple days/weeks with the final day being Saturday.

I think that's basically the idea behind early voting

the only problem is there are not enough Saturday hours. I think the second Saturday of early voting is a half day.

I'm hearing record voting in certain areas. Not in all areas.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Obama to win by 30%

That is what someone just let slip on MSNBC. They don't want to talk about the results this early, but Russert just let slip "If he wins by the 30 or more points as projected" or something like that.

I saw Trippi on earlier...

and some of the things he said led me to believe he knew they had gotten second...that sucks.

Opinions?

Any discussion on Edwards' viability, folks?

Nope

I want him in until I get to vote for him. :)

The fact is I want someone who best represents me and neither of other two falls into that category. Won't vote for either of them until I have to in November. I'm tired of the nominee being decided before we get our primary in May. (hopefully it will still be in May) Heck....if he decides to pull out of the race I may still write in his name.

Congratulations to Obama tonight. I'm glad it looks like he got enough of the white vote so we don't have to listen to the pundits drone on and on and on about that. I think he has the nastiest race ahead in the general, but let him fight the Repugs and not the media. I'm just about tired of the pundits.

The way the calendar is set up...

I think it may well come to us. After Feb 5th the only other big days are Mar 4th (OH, TX) and PA in late April. Then its us and IN on the same day. I don't see anyone breaking away enough to win a decisive victory before then the way they're going.

When is...

Don't mess with American Samoa votes Stormbear?

you may get your wish!

After tonight, they will be scrapping for the delegates of American Samoa!*stormbear

American Samoa is a very tiny island in the Pacfic Ocean located somewhere west of Tin-Buck-Too. In the recent years it has been the hotbed of college and NFL football recruiting when they found that the young male citizens could run like a Panther, Pick up a Shark with one hand and eat it raw and have the sense of humor like a monkey on free Beer...It is also known for world famous dancing girls who have become cheerleaders in the colleges and the NFL. It is also known for Republican corruption when Jack Abramsoff pay off the local Governor for his vote in the American Senate on a labor wage bill...It was later reveal to Mr Abramsoff that the American Samoa Government did not have a Senator in the United States Congress. Mr Abramsoff demanded a refund for his payoff from the former Governor, who in turn told the FBI about his attempted refund method. The former Governor also told 4 Samoa members of the Washington Redskins of Mr Abramsoff collection efforts.....Mr Abramsoff was found in a Washington Redskins parking lot stuff with monkey up his tail and a arrest warrent in his mouth from the FBI one Sunday morning....

Correction! When Mr Abramsoff was sentence for his crimes against the United States, he requested that his future roomates not be American Samoa's nor be allow visits from monkeys!

No visits from monkeys?

Between you and Max...

I'm beginning to think there's a slow gas leak here at BlueNC. I'll take half of whatever you two are on.

1-2-3 CNN

Obama 52%
Clinton 33%
Edwards 15%

CNN calls these based on exit polls + numbers so far.

Follow-up: I think the numbers will be changing but the are definitely calling second place for Clinton.

Well, looky there

JRE at 20%.........better than 4% :)

February 5th.

If Edwards could get a number of seconds and maybe win Oklahoma and perhaps Tennessee on February 5th, he will continue to play a role in the nomination.

I remember

the feel of the country when her father was elected, even though I was only in grade school at the time. It was magical. The charisma Obama brings is probably as close as anyone has gotten to that in the past 48 years. Much as I like JE, Obama would be easy to vote for. A Hillary candidacy, on the other hand, would have me voting Libertarian.

Can't hang tonight

Honestly, I'm glad SC got their results in quickly. I'm not feeling well, so going to head on to bed.

Congrats again to the Obama camp. Will check in with you all in the morning.

Our own Public Policy

Our own Public Policy Polling, right here in North Carolina, had the most accurate poll in South Carolina of any outfit in the country.

We were the only outfit that predicted Obama would win by 20 points or more. You can see how we stacked up with everyone else here.

Oh quitcher braggin :)

I saw Dean D being quoted in the CharO, I believe. I thought I also saw PPP on CNN maybe? I've read so many papers/sites today I can't remember.

Congratulations!....and you know I'm just teasing. We're happy our local folks are doing such good work.

Haha we have to brag on

Haha we have to brag on nights like this because a lot of the time the national press gives us no respect because they don't think a small outfit down south can do an accurate poll.

Just got back from SC

I'm exhausted. I was the precinct captain for Precinct 8 in Rock Hill.
I was canvassing door-to-door from 9 am - 6 pm.
I'm guessing it made at least a little difference :-)

And yes, it definitely wasn't just "the black vote" that turned this into a landslide victory for Obama.

One interesting story for all the Edwards fans on here might be that when there was still talk on CNN about a struggle between Hillary and Edwards for second place, everyone in the local Obama HQ started chanting "Edwards, Edwards".
I'll post a lot more about my experiences in SC soon, but for now I'll just sleep for a day or so.
Left on 49

Glad you're home safe and sound

Now get yourself to bed and get some rest. You can fill us in tomorrow.

me too!

congrats, liberalnc! we did it!

i just got back from columbia, where we celebrated the victory and listened to the victory speech after canvassing in the florence area from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. a group of us from triangle for obama left for chapel hill this morning at 5:30 a.m.

it was a crazy day! but now, it's all so worth it.

one thing i did want to hear other people's thoughts on -- the complete loss of respect i had for bill clinton. the things he is saying are really hurting our party as a whole. when will he just shut up?!

from the washington post's political blog:

"So much for moving beyond race.

On Saturday, as Sen. Barack Obama was sweeping up the South Carolina primary, former Pres. Bill Clinton was busy downplaying the significance of Obama's impending win, casting it as a function of the state's demographics and the Illinois senator's heavy African American support. "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina in '84 and '88," Clinton said at a rally in Columbia. "Jackson ran a good campaign. And Obama ran a good campaign here." "

how dare he accuse and blame the media for stirring the race pot this week, when it is HE that continues to speaks with arrogance about it and is trying to make it a divisive issue!

I was always a fan of Bill Clinton

despite his horn-dog ways.

But he's gone beyond the pale, now, crossed the line. He thinks he's doing good things, he thinks he's supporting his wife. He's hurting her, and he's hurting the Democratic Party, especially those of us who wondered during the 2000 campaign "Where the hell is Bill Clinton, and why isn't he campaigning for Gore?" and then in the 2004 campaign when Kerry was being swiftboated, I wondered, "Why the hell isn't Clinton doing something? He's the one who could stop this?"

Where was Clinton? Apparently, he was biding his time, waiting for Bush to fuck up the country so much that almost any Democrat could get elected - even his wife. And now he's putting his considerable campaign powers towards pulling down one of the best things that happened to the Democratic Party in the last 10 years: Barack Obama. Make no mistake, if it were Edwards in the lead, he would be going after him, too. He would be talking about lost opportunities in 2004, he would be making snide comments about sick wives.

He is old school. He should have stayed home and remained an "elder statesman" who made humanitarian appeals with other old presidents.

Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi

They did go after Edwards on Friday

in a negative robocall. There was a tape of it on DKos. Apparently, they were afraid Edwards would get second in SC.

Yeah, it was Hillary lying about Edwards on China.

You should have seen Trippi trying to get the press to care, they didn't. There were also other underhanded tactics by the Clinton's against Edwards that didn't get any exposure. IOKIYADIAE

sad but true

I hate it, really, really hate it, that the Clintons chose to run the way they did in SC. I would have been so much happier still thinking well of both. I guess even a die-hard like me has to shed the rosey shades eventually.

South Carolina pretty much did it for me.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing
-Edmund Burke

I think you are wrong, it gets better from the Clintons.

The Clinton's did what they needed to in order to win (they hope). They threw a ton of mud and made a huge mess. But, what were the results and what will we see:
1. Both Hillary and Bill will play nicey-nice for the most part about race.
2. Obama has been labeled as the black candidate, the Clintons hope he has been labeled as the black candidate.
3. The general electorate is 20% Black, 70% white, 10% Hispanic. If the Clinton's can make it a black vs. white in all the other states while playing nicey-nice, then they think the hidden race tension will win them the election.

Many commentators said they thought this was a 1990s strategy which wouldn't work. They might be right, because Obama is pulling in a TON of 18-30 year old voters who don't vote along racial lines like older voters. But, Obama's "white vote" has gone down in every election since Iowa (according to MSNBC exit poll analysis). If their strategy works it will be the dirties politics played on the Democratic side in a long-time and I think it should be considered right alongside Willie Horton as one of the dirtiest campaign tactics of the modern era.

The Clinton team is the team of deception...

and, greed.

One of our favorite Bill Clinton anecdotes involves a confrontation he had with Bob Dole in the Oval Office after the 1996 election. Mr. Dole protested Mr. Clinton's attack ads claiming the Republican wanted to harm Medicare, but the President merely smiled that Bubba grin and said, "You gotta do what you gotta do."
