Tom Fetzer is not gay

This is pretty funny.

I apologize in advance for the content of this message, but as you can see, I had no other choice.

Tuesday, Curtis Wright, a radio and television talk show host in Wilmington, forwarded an anonymous letter alleging that I am gay to Republican leaders throughout North Carolina. The letter is a lie, written by a lying coward. I can't sue the lying coward, but I have authorized my attorneys to sue Curtis Wright and the media outlets he works for.

There are two things you need to know:

1) I am not gay - never have been - never will be. There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to support any of the scurrilous allegations made in the anonymous attack on me.

2) I will spare no cost or hardship in defending my good name. I intend to vigorously pursue legal action against any and all who spread these lies.

The fact that I'm 54 and single does not mean I have to put up with vicious rumors that I'm gay. The fact that I am heterosexual is a matter of public record. The News & Observer once even reported (erroneously) that I had eloped.

I will marry one day, and soon I hope, when I find a woman I can't live without who feels the same way about me. Not before. And not for any other reason. My parents divorced and perhaps that has made me more cautious than most. But I will get married for the right reason. Of the many wrong reasons to get married, to do so in order to fill-out one's political resume tops the list.

I have been involved in politics for over 30 years -- as an activist, a candidate and an elected official - and this is the most outrageous smear I have ever seen. And I will not tolerate it. Neither should you. Neither should our Party.

As I have traveled around the state, I have made it clear that I will be a Chairman who will FIGHT for our Party and our principles. I'm also going to FIGHT to defend my good name.

The best way to fight a lie is with the truth and that's what I intend to do. I hope you will stand with me in making it clear to those who would disseminate this kind of garbage that there is no room in our Party for them or their lies.

Now, I'm going back to work and continue to focus on leading our Party to victory in the next two years. I ask you to join me in that effort.

I'm writing FIGHT in ALL CAPS, too, just to PROVE that I'm NOT GAY either!

James (not-gay-either) Protzman

PS Just kidding

So what?

So what if Tom is gay but I guess I keep forgeting that to be called gay in the Republican Party is still considered a slur.

Wake up Republicans. This is 2009, a new millinium, who you love should not be an issue.

He sure looks pretty in that suit.

I assume the answer is no, but I'll ask anyway...

Is there a Log Cabin Republican organization/branch here in North Carolina? I know this seems silly, but this is a teaching point that A) no one cares about his sexuality (well...okay, that's not true, but you know what I mean...) and B) we're all insulted that the former mayor, who represented a fair number of homosexuals in the offices he's served in, seems to think that being labeled homosexual "is the most outrageous smear [he has] ever seen."

Mr. Fetzer, there are many, many things which are much more outrageous* (not going to make joke about his use of that word...I have on my serious face). While I disagree with many, if not most, of the principles of your party, as a leader of people, I hope you recognize that the words you choose affect our state, its citizens, and its children. Let's try to unite in common humanity, and THEN debate the issues, okay?

*I suppose we should be thankful he didn't send any CDs out like his national GOP chair candidates...

I don't know of any LCR organizations here, but then again I couldn't find any Stonewall Democrat group or LGBT caucus here either.

Does anyone know if we have one?

Boku no otto wa totemo aishite

No LCR group to speak of

There's a guy near Charlotte who claims to speak for Log Cabin NC, but he operates as a lone wolf and is a bit touched. He's been posting on The N&O lately, but don't take him seriously. National LCR has no staff at the moment, so they can't control who uses their name at the state level, like this guy.

Short answer, no.

I was forwarded a couple of letters from an anonymous source

One was the letter stating that Fetzer is gay. I chose not to post the letters, but I fully intended to mention it in a post pointing out that the NCGOP is far more dysfunctional than the Dem Party is.....currently.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

He threatens to sue now? After all these years?

I thought this was going to be left to the idiots at Talking About Politics.

Bring me some butter for the popcorn. Enjoy the show.

Seriously, this is news?

TAP has always had

a few oddballs, but that place is like a trainwreck now. And I can't stop watching. ;/

Dysfunctional Party

I am amused by the dysfunctional Rep. party but .....this week I have started to worry about my yellow dog status. Easley, Tony Rand, Max Baucus, the party vote on Guantanamo... sometimes power corrupts. Those of us who like the Democratic Party might wish soon that the Repugs were around to keep us on our toes.

If I were Tom

I'd be grateful for having this chance to clear up any misconceptions.

My theory is that Tom is a

My theory is that Tom is a Dandy. :>)

I'm a moderate Democrat.

Sad commentary

on the way Fetzer percieves his active fellow R party members. If he is so worried about what they think of his being gay, then he obviously thinks that, unlike the way the rest of the public is moving, Rs in NC are still stuck with the same old prejudices and head-in-the-sand mentality.

In some way its sort of reassuring to see another indicator of the continuing marginalization of Republicans - although with over 10% unemployement now in NC it's probably bad for everyone that this is still seen as an issue.

Fetzer doesn't need Curtis to do this.....

he does a fine job of this on his own:

"Fetzer and his attorneys wrote that Curtis spread rumors that "tend to charge Mr. Fetzer with a crime of offense involving moral turpitude, to charge Mr. Fetzer with dishonesty, to disgrace and degrade Mr. Fetzer, to hold Mr. Fetzer up to public ridicule and contempt, and to cause Mr. Fetzer to be avoided and shunned." "
