Water usage skyrockets as drought looms

Consumer-driven society freaks out over potential restrictions:

“In the past several weeks we’ve been slammed with water customers irrigating lawns,” said Harold Blizzard, Craven County manager.

“We’re just not able to pump it fast enough,” said Blizzard. “The demand is so great our elevated water storage tanks are unable to fully recover overnight from the previous day's usage.”

This is not what they had in mind when they said "It's time to prepare for drought conditions."

Agreed, and

to those among us who've had wells drilled in recent years in order to circumvent water use restrictions, that's my drinking water you're wasting. Many people in rural areas of this state still rely on wells for all of our water needs. County or municipal water is not even available to most of us.

So before you go turning on that irrigation system to keep your lawn lush and green remember that some of us need that water to live.

Thanks for posting this, it's an issue very close to my heart (not mention the rest of my body).

It's a double-edged sword

The more people water their lawns, the more they have to mow the grass, the bigger their carbon footprint is.

Wasting water, wasting energy, polluting the air. It's hard to imagine so many people think a lush green lawn is more important than the future of our planet.

See how long your neigbors complain about your 2 foot weeds and dust bowl in your front yard to the local authorities, before you are fine 5 thousand dollars for growing a Desert in your Gated Community...It's not a perfect Democrat world Steve nor a promise Republican Paradise either.
