What have the Republicans accomplished?

Let's all put on our non-partisan hats today and try to come up with a list of the positive things the Republicans have accomplished in the last 20 years.

Come on, you can do this. I will barely hurt.

I'll wait.

Take your time.

Nothing?

Me neither and I slept in my damn hat.

Hope chest.

Good one.

I didn't know if that would come across.

My Great-Grandmother and her generation (born before the Depression) would say, "She never opened her hope chest" as a polite way of saying the woman never opened her heart (or other things) and married for "impure" reasons - for money, for status and really didn't care about her husband.

Hope Chest

Please allow me to get back to the earlier posts on this:

Actually - and I'm not all that old, just 40 - but I thought the reference to "Hope Chest" was slamming Dole for not having truly lived in North Carolina since her high school / college days? How did I get that? Simple: Up through the 1960s (when my mother graduated from high school), young women graduates often received a cedar wood chest for their keepsakes and graduation things, etc., and it was called - unless I'm having a memory lapse - a "hope chest." A local merchant and popular Democrat who owned a furniture store did this down here in Richmond County for 40 years and I also heard about others providing for such cedar chests elsewhere. ... Anyway, in the cartoon it makes reference to Dole not having her NC flag up in her office and that perhaps it was still in her Hope Chest, a point which to me - and maybe only me? - meant that she hadn't thought about NC since she fled either after high school or her subsequent days at Duke University.

Am I right?

If I'm mistaken about the whole intent of "Hope Chest" thing in the cartoon, then in parts of NC at least the cartoon still has a double meaning, and that makes the cartoon all the more powerful a punch for those of us reading it here. Great job!

Regardless, Dole is not one of us, she's a rubber stamp for the Bush-Cheney (mis-)Administration, and she lives in the Watergate Hotel while her husband remains a Kansas citizen. Frankly it is embarrassing that we have a Senator with so little contact with this State.

That's the same interpretation I had

I actually have a hope chest - although mine is a walnut blanket box/chest.

I've got one

My great grandfather made it for my grandmother. How cool is that? God, I love family.

wow

Im too young to get that side I guess, but that is a pretty cool interpretation. Makes the cartoon that much better.

"Keep the Faith"

Exactly

My aunts all had these cedar chests where they would store things for when they got married like "something borrowed" and China dinner ware. So if the woman "didn't open up her hope chest" she wasn't serious about the marriage.

Ergo, Dole was never serious about NC. She never opened her heart to the Old North State.

Accomplishment

Alienating me. They turned out to not stand for what I thought they stood for or what they said they stood for. So, for better or worse, I became Unaffiliated and eventually found BlueNC. They've got that going for them, which is nice...

I think that's happened to a lot of people

A long, long time ago I was a conservative . . . and then I realized that "conservative" had nothing to do with "conserve." Now I think of myself as just Blue. Not as conservative. Not as liberal. Not as Republican. Not as Democrat. Not as Green. Not as Yellow. Not as Libertarian. I think of myself as Blue.

Yes, -A-

but are you curious? ;)

Wow! How many here were "conservatives?"

The first person I voted for was Reagan and that was the last time I voted for a Republican. As a young man, I learned that "trickle down" was just a polite way of saying "look out below."

Then there were those 8 years on the Perot bandwagon - no need to talk about THAT!

It is quite refreshing being

It is quite refreshing being Unaffiliated. I can be an equal opportunity praiser/offender. I also don't have to worry about the pressure to be a "good" party member.

The downside is that now the Dem's AND Rep's come calling for votes/money/help. Thank goodness for Caller ID.

Hee

That's why we're using cell phones for "cold calls" in 2008. (Please smile at this - I'm smiling as I type it.)

Grrrr

Is gritting teeth the same as smiling?

I promise

to let you know before it starts, and you can tell me which numbers to leave off the list. How's that? I hate cold calls, too.

only

if he votes for us! dont let him (her?) off easy!

"Keep the Faith"

I don't play that way.

Really. I don't.

I honestly want people to vote their conscience.

And the last thing I want is to have people voting for the lesser of two evils.

If you know his number

it isn't a cold call. You're just calling a friend. :)

HAHAHA!

I didn't think of it that way!

We really will be using cell phones - and we did last election, too - because so many people have free minutes and free long distance.

But SPLib - If you want your name off the call list for the Dems, I can make that happen. Just PM me, and I'll be glad to make sure.

We benefit from their blunders

Glad you are here.
