Could Be an Interesting Test Case

While the US is moving some troops out of al-Anbar, the wild west of Iraq, into Baghdad. And not without reason. But what if the reduction of troops in Anbar leads to a reduction in violence? That would bolster the case for those that say we should leave sooner rather than later. And if Anbar gets even worse and Baghdad does not improve, it raises the question of whether the country is lost. If hunkering-down in Baghdad does not work, then we should quit kidding ourselves about a democracy there for now, and ask the Iraqi government for a national referendum on our presence and role. Until or unless someone compellingly makes the case to some critical mass of US voters that years of patience in Iraq are preferable, we have built-in referendums coming in '06 and '08 here at home.

Do you believe we actually need a referendum

to know what the Iraqi's want or is this just a formality that is necessary for the rest of the world? It will be our out. It will be something we can wave for all to see and shout from the rooftops that we are only doing what the people of Iraq are asking.(I can hear the Rose Garden press briefing now.) We will only be fooling ourselves. The rest of the world knows just how badly the United States screwed this one up. Iraq will always be the proof that when standing alone - and we were basically alone - the United States is not a world power. We need to repair our relationships with traditional allies and we probably need to do some branching out. This is not something George Bush is capable of doing.

I was part of that "we've got to clean up the mess we've made" contingency. I have since changed my mind. We do not have the leadership in place that is capable of cleaning up this mess.

Meant to say....

I'm really enjoying your short posts. They are very thought-provoking. I'm not capable of short posts. Everything is a novel to me.

any exit strategy is going

any exit strategy is going to involve a fig leaf of some sort. needn't be the referendum, but some success is needed in baghdad to build on or we need to start picking fig leaves, so to speak.

True

I just shudder at the thought of W's snake-oil voice delivering his "victory" speech. Fig leaf....hiding our nakedness...good one.
