Debate!
I am not a career politician and am new to the debate scene. I am a career educator with a passion for serving the people of our district who have been betrayed by Virginia Foxx and her callous voting record in Congress. I want people to come away from these debates knowing that I am the candidate who will best represent their values, understand the needs of their communities, and always place their best interests above political gain.
Growing up and having raised my own family in the mountains of Northwest North Carolina, as well as teaching and coaching in the region for 40 years, I have a deep understanding of the needs facing the working families in the 5th District.
It is an honor to have this opportunity to discuss the many important issues that working families in our district face daily. I look forward to sharing my vision for bringing our people together to find real solutions for economic prosperity, educational excellence, and healthcare reform.
Please join my wife, Pat, and I, our daughters Andrea Carter-Gimlin, and Stacey Carter in the Anneberg Forum of Carswell Hall on the campus of Wake Forest University tomorrow evening, April 16th at 7pm.
The debate is being sponsored by the Wake Forest University College Democrats and by the National Championship Wake Forest University Debate Team. The Forsyth County Democratic Party will host a reception for the candidates in the lobby of Annenberg forum immediately following the debate.
The debate will feature questions prepared by the Wake Forest University College Democrats and will be moderated by Bob Costner, Triad Managing Editor and Senior Reporter for television News 14 Carolina. In addition to prepared questions from the moderator, audience members will submit written questions in advance, which the moderator will draw at random during the second portion of the program.
A second debate will be held on Monday, April 28, 2008 in Boone and will be sponsored by the Appalachian State University College Democrats. Details for this debate will be made available as soon as plans are finalized.
I have asked my communications team to make sure that media credentials be made available to the blogging community, and that blogging stations be set up along with the needs of other media. Please contact Levi Knapp if you're interested in attending either or both debates. Levi can be reached at levi@roycarterforcongress.com or at our headquarters 336.499.4140.
Thank you to Blue NC and the rest of the blogging community for your wonderful participation in this election.

Innovative and risky at the same time
Innovative by giving credentials to certain bloggers who can get the word out just as quick or quicker then the media. Bloggers also do not have the "fair and neutral" title to uphold. BlueNC is there, you know the slant. By allowing bloggers to have the same or similar credentials and access to the debaters, WOW. Hope the other debaters have the same openness to accept this challenge. Instant writing and interpretations from the guy in the trenches without going through an editor. Raw energy of the debate. Coolness.
Risky because the story of the debate might actually swing to the blogging history-making aspect vice the debate itself. Other candidates may not accept to debate for fear of what bloggers might say or write about. Kinda tough to go after BlueNC when Parmea writes something not in-line with what the candidate wished. LLC stuff. Glad you guys have that.
But I think this is just the big toe of bloggers becoming mainstream reporters and reporting. When folks blog with credibility, their stories will be read and accepted just like any other reporting entity. Credibility is the key.
The Times etc, are about to lose their overall monopoly on journalistic control of the country. Bloggers are about to take over that role.
Big papers will soon become the table of content for bloggers. Read the times to let folks know their is an issue out there, then go to the blogs to get the real story.
Parmea you're absolutely
Parmea you're absolutely right, the risk is high. Its a decision that was not come to lightly. At the end of the day, when I received a phone call from our Communications Director asking what we had decided I couldn't hesitate. I realized that by not inviting the blogosphere I was protecting Roy Carter, the man, from being being under the microscope. That would be unfair to Roy Carter the candidate. The beauty of being part of a representative government is that we, as citizens, have every right to ask for accessibility, and to expect transparency. Some recent entries on BlueNC have so impressed with their journalistic qualities and their keeping candidates and campaigns accountable. When I approached Roy Carter and Campaign Manager, Ryan Eller with the idea of inviting bloggers to our debate series, they both acted as if that were a given. Surprising because its not very common. I am pleased to work with people that recognize the importance of the internet and the power of Blogs to get messages out there, and a great way to gain support. I guess I am fortunate that they do, if not, I probably wouldn't have been hired.
Bloggers have had this sort of access for awhile.
I've sat in the media room at several John Edwards events and was invited to do so at most of the major debates. But, beyond that I agree with most of what you wrote.
Have your opponents accepted the debate?
