Discussing Social Media Using Janet Cowell's Ad/Facebook Status Update
This is how new media works. I open my browser and see that I have ten "Facebook Friends" online and what their status messages are currently. Janet and/or staff is smart enough to write "is watching my new ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bINDLVRey4o" as her status message. Click, Click. Here you go.
Do you social media? Which ones? Are you one of the early adopters that has been into Facebook since it was just for college kids? Have you twittered? Does your business have a public or private blog for its employees? Where do you stand?

I'm still trying to decide how to intergrate this into a paying
job.

Cowell has the kid vote
Wow. Who is that handsome family seen 19 seconds into the ad? :-)
As for blogs and politics, when I voted Friday I took into account which candidates had a blog and which ones didn't. While a lack of a blog wasn't necessarily a negative, any candidate who started a blog and let it wither wasn't looked upon favorably.
That's one question I'd still like to see asked of (or discussed about) our gubernatorial candidates: which one is more technologically savvy or friendly? Who will win the geek vote?

Wow...that is a very good looking family
:D
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

I don't think either is very savvy, which is kind of sad since Richard Moore was responsible for investing our money in tech stocks. Guess that is why we own so much Google.
Bev Perdue's campaign seems to be the most friendly, although still very hands off.
Perdue
When I slammed the tone of the race here at BlueNC a while back, Perdue's campaign followed my link to my website. I thought that was telling.

If you aren't aware that Moore has done an excellent job
as State Treasurer, you should be. But as for whether he or Perdue has creds for tech geekery, no, I guess not. Neither do I, but I can assure you that has nothing to do with whether I can out-think, out-reason, out-maneuver or out-wit any uppity danged whippersnapper computer whiz.

If you were in charge of investing millions of dollars....
and those investments were going to rely heavily on tech; then, I think you should understand it pretty damn well. Can you possibly disagree with that? Do you want Grandpa Jones with his rotary phone making decisions about what tech stock to invest in? I'm not saying Moore = Grandpa Jones, I'm just saying that I would expect a high-level of tech understanding and savvy from him.
Remember, I'm the same guy who scoffed when Easley's appointed head of the Email Committee announced that he didn't use email. Equal opportunity scoffer.
Oh if only
I were in charge!
(We'd all be in terrible trouble)
Yes, Robert, I do disagree -- completely.
What one wants in a leader is that the leader be intelligent enough to gather the best expertise on any given issue and make good use of that advice. S/he cannot suddenly become a medical doctor, nor can s/he become an engineer, nor a military general, nor a sociologist, nor a linguist, etc . . . . The list of areas in which it is desirable for a given leader to be expert goes on and on and on.
The assumption that one cannot make intelligent decisions about a given subject without actually being an expert in that particular subject is silly.
Just figures you computer types would think this-a-way!
When I'm Empress, *you* Robert, better watch it . . . .

How many stocks does North Carolina own in....
sociology?
linguistics?
military appropriations?
medical practice (vs. medical products)?
How much do they have invested in tech? We expect him to be able to discuss Investment Banking, grain futures, etc. Why not tech?
Lemme get this straight ~
You think the only thing that a leader needs to understand is computer stocks? Whaa?
I wonder if we're having two separate conversations here. My point is the same, though, in either case (and I suspect you know that). A leader needs to know how to ask questions, be able to select advisors for those areas in which s/he is not expert, be able to assess the advisor's credibility, and be able to make reasonable use of the information.
No, no, no, s/he does not have to personally be an expert in any of the many, many fields that are significant to his or her constituents' concerns.
For that matter, are techies in any given area of technology UNITED in their assessments? Do computer geeks AGREE on all aspects of the field?
I know a lot of techies who are great at understanding how computer work but who completely suck at communicating -- which is perhaps one of the most important qualities a leader (in ANY field) should have.
I guess you can't vote for any of the democratic candidates running for State Treasurer, Robert, since none of them is an expert in computer technology (I don't think Daughtridge is, either, but maybe you know something I don't about him).
What horsehockey!

Whatever. You're impossible. I'm done trying.
Well OFF with your head, too!
You didn't try very hard.
At the risk of getting my head chopped off ...
I'm with Brunette on this one.
A candidate's ability to use blogs, etc., to communicate with potential voters has absolutely nothing to do with his/her ability to assess the relative merits of investing in particular tech stocks. That's a bit of a stretch, methinks.
Chop
This isn't a guillotine, though. It's just a sharp-edged version of waterboarding. Don't worry. It won't hurt.
If I were in charge of investing millions of dollars
I would invest it only in things I knew.
OR
I would surround myself with experts. The very best advisors I could find in all of the areas available for me to invest in. And a few generally smart smart people (like, say, Brunette, because I don't want my head chopped off). And I'd listen. And I'd listen more. And I'd ask questions. And I'd listen more. And then I'd lay out a plan. and I'd listen some more, then I'd lay out the altnernative and then I'd act. And I'd do it in an incredibly fast amount of time because especially when you're talking about investments, there's not a lot of time.
I don't expect any of the toppity top people to know everything about everything. I expect them to be able to look at someone at the next level down and get the answer.

just voted for her
Just got back from voting and I am so pleased with our slate of candidates, from the top of the ballot all the way down to the bottom. There was not a single race where I was not comfortable voting in. In fact, there were a couple where I had to make a very tough decision. Felt kinda good.

Knowledge and Public Office
Brunette's comment is correct. Who among us really understands "technology?" Can even Robert explain how tiny men confined to a device in his living room are able to conduct nine or more innings of major league baseball? How do we account for the magic voice that instructs us to take our receipt and remember our change in the self service checkout line? What sorcery enables a supernatural typing device to place words on a "computer" "monitor" that are legible to others up to perhaps 5 to 7 MILES AWAY from the source? Often it is what the candidate does NOT know, such as the correct telephone number for Emperor's Club VIP, that truly qualifies him for public office.
Robert probably CAN explain how tiny men confined to a device
in his living room are able to conduct nine or more innings of major league baseball. In fact, he'll probably get on here with a kyte broadcast to tell us any time now! That's the frightening part about Robert - he's just that smart!
Love ya,Robert!

Correction: he WAS smart
but then, tragically, he lost his head.
I have it here in a bucket. Peasants are milling around wanting to dip straws.
Now I feel slightly regretful and wish I hadn't ordered it chopped off.
I think it would be appropriate
to use this post of Robert's to note what a brilliant, charming, attractive, astute, technologically savvy and up-to-date, wise, honorable and -- ok I already said brilliant, didn't I -- thoroughly wonderful human being Janet Cowell happens to be.
She will make an outstanding State Treasurer for North Carolina. She truly is exactly what we need, and will make each of us proud.
