Duke Energy v. Duke University

When it comes to working from a base of facts about renewable energy in North Carolina, it's a battle of two Dukes. Duke Energy would have us believe their coal-dirty hands are tied and alternatives are impractical. Duke University, on the other hand, seems to suggest that Duke Energy is full of crap.

When you're in a clear-thinking state of mind, download Myths and Facts about Electricity in the South (pdf) and read it cover to cover. You'll come to grip with six myths.

  • Myth 1: Energy efficiency and renewable energy by themselves cannot meet the South’s growing electricity demand.
  • Myth 2: The South does not have sufficient renewable energy resources to meet a Federal Renewable Electricity Standard.
  • Myth 3: Renewable energy cannot be promoted without escalating electricity rates.
  • Myth 4: Energy efficiency and renewable energy policies are not compatible.
  • Myth 5: Cost-effective energy efficiency and renewable energy policies are sufficient to retire existing coal plants and reduce air pollution.
  • Myth 6: Power Resource Decisions Have Little Impact on Water Resources.

An excellent and timely report, James. Having worked for a...

communications utility(telephone) for many years, these companies don't like to do anything that would change their rate structure, which insures all those executive bonuses. And for the media to go to these same executives for opinions is a joke. There is a reason why all developed countries are moving ahead with renewable energy. It works! Just look at our communications where we were among the best when I retired in 1992, and now we're number 26 or so, still relying on copper cable, instead of moving to fiber optic. There is no "free enterprise" with utilities, only monopolies where they try to squeeze the consumers for all it's worth.
