Ending Domestic Violence. One Family at a Time.
Dispatch called earlier so I was expecting them. It was after midnight when they knocked on the door. The seven of them, standing there with nothing except a small suitcase between them. The youngest, leaning into mom, clearly just awakened from his sleep in the patrol car. The oldest boys were bickering and the little girl was barefooted. They were dirty and tired and scared but I could see relief in mom’s face. This was at least a break for her, a chance to breathe and make a plan. I brought them in, offered them food, drinks, and helped mom get her children all tucked into bed before I started the paperwork that would tell me how we ended up together on this hot, hot night in July. The officer left, promising to keep a watchful eye.
We talked and I wondered if she was worried if I was judging her. I wasn't; I was nervous, worried about her and procrastinating doing the intake. It’s never easy, a stranger- me- asking so many questions, taking notes. I learned quickly that it’s just best to listen and let the conversation fill in the blanks. And that’s what I did that night. I listened as her anger fell to whispers, her sobs pausing in moments of silence.
Her story filled the room.
I had seen hundreds of women before I met “Mary” and her children that night at the shelter. Hundreds of different women sitting across from me in that same chair that Mary was now sinking into, all with a past, present and future rooted in common experience. Mary was different though. She traveled farther and she may have to keep moving. She came here out of state; a refugee, on the run from her husband who had already found her and the children at her sister’s and fired shots into the house.
She wasn’t going back. She was done. This family, broken and scarred in spirit and body started over here, teaching everyone they met something about survival, strength, perseverance and love.
Thanks to the power of our community we were able to embrace Mary and her young family, providing her with the tools to put her life back together the best that she could. We supported her through the divorce, the daily individual and family therapy, the court appearances; we helped her find housing, a job, a car.
It was hard for her. It is still hard for her. It will always be hard for her and the children, the silent witnesses. The violence they observed and endured for so many years of their young lives had a grave impact on their fragile egos, framing their lives and instilling a dark and sad view of the world.
The thing about "Mary" is that she is everywhere-- she is your neighbor, your co-worker, the chic at the drive through, your favorite bank teller, the woman you always pass on your way to work, she is someone's daughter, sister, mother. I deeply believe that we have a very unique responsibility to do everything that we can to stop domestic violence-- to build strong communities that make it very clear that abuse is not acceptable.
The fact is that on average, women will leave an abuser seven times before leaving for good. Too many are murdered before that happens. According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund nearly one-third of all women murdered in the United States in recent years were murdered by a current or former intimate partner. In 2007 the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence reported that there were 83 domestic violence homicides within our state. In 2006: 79; 2005: 71; 2004: 81; 2003: 72; 2002: 79.

I strongly believe that communities have the power, and responsibility, to work as a united front, proactively creating and maintaining programs and policy that prevent, and eliminate a culture of violence so things like THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS OR THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS OR THIS THIS THIS AND THIS don't happen.
I set out writing this post about gun violence, about why we need to keep guns from people like Mary’s husband. I ended up writing about "Mary" because her story needs to be told and because I believe that the political action we need to end family violence will come out of stories like Mary's that teach us what is wrong, and what is right, with what we are doing to build stronger and safer families and communities.

Great job shining a light on a subject that gets swept aside too easily.
In times of economic stress, war, and other things that lead to insecurity, domestic violence escalates. Remember:
Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi
