Environmental Scorecard Results Are Available Now!

The Conservation Council of NC has released it's environmental scorecard for the 2007 session of the General Assembly. Of particular interest are the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Filthy Five," legislators with basement level scores and who nearly always side with polluters over people.

The May 6th primary is just around the corner. And while most of the attention has been focused on top-of-the-ticket races—president, governor, and US Senate—all 170 of our state legislative seats are up for grabs this year.

The activities of our legislature are often overlooked by voters, even the most engaged voters, which is a shame because these men and women make decisions that really impact our lives: Funding for schools, roads and transportation, public health, and environmental protections.

Just in time for the upcoming primary, the Conservation Council of North Carolina has released its 2007 Legislative Scorecard. The scorecard ranks state legislators based on votes they cast in last year’s long session of the General Assembly.

To help shine a light on legislators who have failed to protect the health and welfare of the citizens of North Carolina, the Conservation Council named a “Dirty Dozen” list of State House members. These twelve consistently sided with polluters over people. Additionally, CCNC named “The Filthy Five,” a list of 5 State Senators who also had abysmal rankings.

Thanks, Mike.

This is good stuff. I wish we had more of these comparative rankings to help distinguish who's who in the Big House (and Senate).

Thanks for posting this. Its

Thanks for posting this. Its extremely important to know how our state legislatures are voting on the issues that are of such great importance to the well being of North Carolina's citizens.
The fact that any elected official would take the side of polluters boggles my mind. They should be taken to task for it.
Accountability is necessary for all levels of government. If someone isn't voting the way we like them too we need to be active in informing their constituents. The beauty of representative government is that we can oust those that don't look out for our best interests.
It frustrates me that more people don't take the time to get involved.
Great resource, THANKS

Mine is in the Filthy Five

Goodall's district covers just a sliver of Mecklenburg and I just happen to live in it, lucky me.

Well that's just lovely...(sarcasm intended) ...both of our reps

are "representing"...Jean Jean the money machine...Sen. Jean Preston and her hand puppet..Rep. Pat McElraft...and mind you they are representatives for the "Crystal Coast"....otherwise becoming known as the "Condo Coast" geeeeeeeeeeezzzz...

Well, the good news is we have a great candidate to run against Pat McElraft...Barbara Garrity-Blake...

Patty is known locally for single handedly pulling out the "Downeast McOrdinance" from her sleeve at the last minute...poof...there is was......this all happened a year or so ago when a local grassroots org (Downeast Tomorrow) tried to have the County Commission (of which Patty was then a member) issue a moratorium until we could get a handle on the rash of arrogant and greedy development. Of course, they voted against the moratorium and for the "Downeast McOrdiance"..which has no teeth at all...we need help on the coast..for those of you from 'upstate' that visit our beaches, please take a moment and if you would, donate to the campaign for Barbara Garrity-Blake...

One by one we lose

It saddens me to see the total disreguard that many of our elected officals have towards the environment.

Dateline - Seven Springs NC

Seven Springs,a small rural town in Wayne County, on the banks of the Neuse river.
With a beautiful little church on the hill overlooking the town, where my grandmother and many generations of my family are buried.

Seven Springs is named for the seven natural springs located down near the river. There was a neat little building built over the springs and it was a local business bottling and selling the water long before aquafina. They had it in 5 gal glass bottles. And these seven springs, all together in not a very big building all had a different flavor to the water. It was different from every spring.

Hot summer days you could go down to the spring house and have a drink from your favorite spring. Clean refreshing water, pure and safe to drink.

Sometimes the river would flood and they would close the springs until the river receeded and the water flowed pure again.

Or that is the way it use to be. I haven't lived in that area now in almost 30 years. It is my understanding that after a number of huricanes a few years ago, that after being flooded again and again by the Neuse, that the springs were closed as a health hazard. That so much pollution was introduced into the springs that they are now not safe to drink.

One by one we lose these gifts of nature that we have been blessed with.
When will we stand with one voice and say
ENOUGHT

At the War crimes trials after World War II the term " Crime against Humanity" was introduced to the legal system.

If the distruction of this planet that we have born witness to ourselves, in our lifetimes, does not fall under that charge, nothing does.

And most of the time it has been done for the same reasons Jean Preston and Pat McElraft use to justify their votes.

Profit.

Well, Johnston's batting 1000, I see.

Daughtry and Langdon. When are Republicans going to figure out that we can't keep poisoning the land without killing the very thing that makes NC and Johnston County a great place to live?

And Helms begat Reagan...

Arguably, Ronald Reagan's Helms enabled win in the 1976 NC primary was all the encouragement he needed to try again in 1980, setting the stage for the Reagan Revolution and synergistic escapades like this one...

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
