Etheridge to Vote for S-CHIP
I just received the below press release from my congressman, Rep. Etheridge, and he is going to vote for S-CHIP. What a great turn of events. Congrats to everyone who wrote, called, emailed, and railed. Here is the press release:
Etheridge to Vote for S-CHIP Veto Override
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today announced that he will vote to override the President’s veto of H.R. 976, the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007. Etheridge strongly supports the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, but voted against the legislation on September 24 because it would be funded by a 61-cent tobacco tax increase.
“After careful consideration, I have decided to vote to override the President’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. As the only former state schools chief serving in Congress, my life’s work has been to provide for a better future for the next generation, and health care is critically important to that effort,” said Etheridge.
“S-CHIP is an effective initiative to extend health insurance to working families who otherwise cannot afford to send their children to the doctor when they are sick. The Congressional Research Service reported this week that unless Congress increases funding, North Carolina will run out of S-CHIP money in May 2008.
“I remain concerned that a tobacco-tax increase could harm North Carolina’s rural economy. However, as a senior member of the House Agriculture Committee and the Chairman of a key subcommittee, my efforts are best focused at this time on working to secure a disaster relief package for farm communities devastated by the drought.”

Proud to see it
I appreciate Etheridge's concerns for NC farmers and really respect his decision to choose children's health care.
Yeah, ba-aby!!!
Iin general Etheridge seems to be a rather sensible sort, though I could do without a few of his votes.
Good news indeed, thank you.

Thanks. Front-paged
I appreciate you taking the time to write this up. Finally some good news from Etheridge.
Now if we can just get him to take a stand on Bush's Insane War.

Irony?
In order to provide better health to children, we are asking adults and other children to ruin theirs by smoking tobacco. It's kind of like making an anti-missile missile.

People who smoke are gonna smoke
They (and their second hand smoke) cost the rest of us health problems and dollars. It's about time they coughed up some money. (and yes, I purposely used the word coughed). I don't feel sorry for them in the least.

Increased Cigarette Tax reduces teen smoking
I think it is entirely consistent to strike 2 blows for children's health - insurance coverage and incentive to not start smoking.

I"m glad you're running for office, Ed.
And not me. I think it's clear you have a much better way with words. :)

Exactly Ed
and I hear childhood asthma can be linked to growing up in a home where there's second hand smoke. If the increase cost of tobacco means less smoke around small children, that's wonderful. Our tobacco farmers can find other cash crops - oh...say...corn and soybeans. I'm sure we can come up with a program to help them equip for the changes.
I'm glad that Ethridge and McIntyre have decided
to vote in favor of children's health care instead of pandering to the tobacco lobby. I'm just sorry it ever came to us having to wonder about their commitment to the wellbeing of their youngest constituents in the first place.

Thanks, Bob
I am glad you figured out what side was the right side in this one.
