Progress NC 2006: Forging a United Agenda for We the People
The Friday Center for Continuing Education – UNC-Chapel Hill
October 19, 2006 – 11:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Progress NC 2006 will examine how state-level budget decisions, environmental regulation, minority-participation barriers, and campaign-financing rules can undermine the progressive agenda, and how we can overcome these challenges together.
Speakers will include Dr. Robert M. Franklin of Emory University, Patrick Bresette of Demos's Public Works, Bob Hall of Democracy NC, Marisol Jimenez McGee of El Pueblo, Hope Taylor-Guevara of Clean Water for NC, and Elaine Mejia of the NC Budget & Tax Center.
OCTOBER SEMINAR ON MENTAL ILLNESS AND THE DEATH PENALTY
The Charlotte School of Law, John S. Leary Bar Association, and Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation are sponsoring a seminar entitled “Mental Illness & the Death Penalty: Seeking a ‘Reasoned Moral Response’ to an Unavoidable Condition” on Friday, October 20. Renowned capital defense attorney Bryan Stevenson of Alabama will be the keynote speaker. Former N.C. Chief Justice Burley Mitchell will also be speaking. Panels will explore the ways in which the criminal justice system misunderstands mental illness and harms our most vulnerable citizens.
