Expert geologist says test drilling for natural gas in Davie Basin is a joke

But hey, why listen to an expert geologist when you can listen to a full-of-baloney ideologue like Andrew Brock?

Paul Thayer has a pretty good idea what the Davie shale basin holds. After all, the 6-mile wide by 4-6-mile long shale basin was the subject of his dissertation for his doctorate in geology from UNC Chapel Hill, making him the only geologist around who has studied it extensively. Asked to weigh in on a proposal for the state to pay for test drilling in the basin, Thayer delivered a blunt response: “My take is, No. 1, that would be a total waste of taxpayer money,” said Thayer, now a professor emeritus of geology at UNC Wilmington. “It’s a pie-in-the-sky thing.”

Start chasing real domestic energy sources in NC

Your link is broken. Correct link here.

The real shame is that there IS an opportunity to spend those tax dollars in a way that will actually produce gas (and jobs). Give it to the hog farmers (hear me out) to capture the methane from their pig feces,
producing electricity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the same time.

Why aren't we doing that?

Pretty sure that was supposed to be already happening

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression hog farmers had agreed to try to develop swine gas on their own, to keep regulators off their back about the lagoon problems.

But your premise is correct. With millions of hogs being raised in NC, it's a huge potential resource.

Just wanted to add:

Methane is several times worse than Co2 as a greenhouse gas. By capturing and burning it as a heat source for power plants, the amount of methane that reaches the atmosphere is greatly reduced. Right now, those lagoons are venting most of that methane straight up. That's my understanding, anyway.

yep

you got it right - something like 20 times the greenhouse effect of CO2. Better to burn it and generate CO2 (and electricity) than to let it go up in the air like we're doing now.

I think it's all about...

grabbing land and controlling local governments more than it ever was about the gas...

Right on target

I'm shocked that the extreme property rights absolutists and libertarians aren't up in in arms over this...
