First Home Ticks, Now Sand Fleas

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

It's bad enough that the Home Ticks are getting their claws into the transfer tax issue, which they have no business being involved with. But now their cousins, the Sand Fleas, are pushing to change years of effective public policy. Coast developers are leaning on the legislature to pass legislation that will allow hardened structures on beaches and inlets - the first step toward building sea walls in front of luxury beachfront properties.

And in case you're not aware, hardened structures on one part of a beach cause accelerated erosion on other parts of the beach. In other words, they're destructive and stupid. The NC Conservation Network is asking sane people like us to contact our representatives to stop Senate Bill 599.

The work shenanigans of the sprawl lobby NC Senate have reached an all time low this year. It's hard to imagine, but it looks like things could get even worse.

Where does the bill stand?

I sent a note to Paul Leubke. I'm sure he will try to kill the bill.

All I know is what I got

From the NC Conservation Network. Sorry I can't provide more information.

What's up with McKissick?

I thought he was a progressive. We progressives are supposed to care about the environment, aren't we? Besides, he's from Durham - they don't have any beach! Why is he co-sponsoring this bill? Does he need a primary opponent?

It's So Hard to Believe

That people who have lived in NC all their lives don't know how a beach works.

hardened structures on beaches and inlets

-

hardened to what extent? ain't nothin' on God's green earth that stands in front of a hurricane and wins.

Why do you think they call it, 'Graveyard of the Atlantic'? Cause it sounds pretty?

I don't think so.

And damn straight I'm tired of my insurance going up cause these knotheads keep building on the beach.

You want beachfront? YOU pay for it. Sans the fancy 'hardened structures' that make you feel good but don't do squat.

After a Hurricane

My brother and I drove down to the beach to get away for a couple of days. We were both going through divorces, and our lives were in major upheaval, much like the beach, I guess. We looked at all the wrecked homes, boats, etc - and my bro said

When you think you've made it, you're king of the world, and you're going to build yourself a castle on the edge of the ocean, Mother Nature has a way of looking you right in the face and saying

Oh No You Won't.

Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi

Did anyone else hear Rusty

Did anyone else hear Rusty Jacobs' story on RTP and growth and think of the Realtors this morning? He mentioned that there was legislation that was currently being blocked , sort of as a tag-end to the story. - BJ
