Getting organized

We do a lot of talking and writing around here, and while that's useful to a point, there ultimately comes a time for action. That's what the theocrats are up to in this comment by Greg. And that's what we need to be up to as well.

Which is why I'm passing along this email I got from a group of progressive Democrats here in North Carolina. (I've edited it for length, so anything that doesn't make sense is all my fault.)

On January 29, 2007, a group of North Carolinians visited our NC congressional members about the War in Iraq and the potential escalation by the current administration into Iran. This effort was organized by United for Peace and Justice and allied organizations. As they met with our representatives or their Legislative Directors, the most profound theme heard in these meetings was the confession that they, our representatives, had become irrelevant in decisions about how our country imposes our narrow interests on other countries, Iraq and Iran in particular.

It was sobering to hear the concern in the voices of these otherwise self-assured Legislative Directors as they spoke about the larger threat of expansion into Iran. They appealed to us to get people back home involved. They urged us to put pressure on colleagues whose support they lack, especially those who won by large margins in the last election.

If you believe that it is fine for Americans to impose our way of life on people of other countries in order to meet our raw materials, energy and human labor needs, and do so by economic coercion or military means, then this message has been miss sent and I apologize for bothering you.

However, if you think we were wrong to kill approximately 650,000 Iraqi people and destroy their infrastructure; if you are an American who is able to put yourself in others' moccasins and see that we sowed seeds of resentment that must be rectified; if you think peaceful coexistence will only come through fulfillment of basic necessities and security needs and the hope for a better tomorrow, rather than by the sword, then it is time to commit to action.

We are not asking you to cross a river in a rickety wooden boat in frigid weather at Valley Forge. We are not asking you to board a landing craft and take a trip to the beach through machine gun and mortar fire. Other Americans did that for you.

But we are asking you to commit: Respond below indicating your agreement to call, e-mail, fax or send letters to your representative promptly upon receiving an appeal to respond to a specific legislative resolution. For example, Walter Jones (R-NC-3) has cosponsored House Joint Resolution 14 to require the President to seek congressional approval before initiating military attacks against Iran. The Bring the Troops Home and Iraqi Restoration Act, House Resolution 508, provides for troops returning home in 6 months, a stabilization plan, and economic aid.

We do not expect to ask your participation often and will not seek further participation after our troops begin an orderly withdrawal.

There is no more important question for you to answer than this: Do you care enough to act? Your response to this appeal will be your answer. We look forward to hearing from you - together we will make a difference for these people and for our own future as a nation and people.

It's a shame that elected officials won't just stand up and do the right thing on their own, but apparently they need cover. That's how the Called2Action theocrats pushed through the Pledge of Allegiance bill in the last legislative session. Fewer than a dozen phone calls from constituents and BOOM . . . a bill gets passed.

So here's my request. Respond in comments below with a verbal commitment, a small first step. Just say "I'm in." Then keep your eyes open for upcoming action alerts. Let us know we can count on you to pick up the phone or send an email that will change the world.

Are you in?

I'm in

Of course.

I make it a practice to send at least one email every day to somebody about something. But Liddy Dole still hasn't answered my question about the OLF.

UPDATE: Just to be clear, I'm not asking anyone to do anything everyday. Just commit to responding to a few urgent requests for action. You can do it.

Act now!

Looking for a little immediate gratification: Go weigh in on the Edwards decision to keep his bloggers on staff.

Look for the action here.

My email to Cong. E.

I don't know the ins and outs of talking to Congresspeople and Senators, but for what its worth i just shot this email off through Cong. E's email form:

We worked our rears off, argued our throats dry, contributed our time that had to be taken from our families, donated our money that we had to take from the family budget, and we made phone calls to people we didn't know to get them to the polls to elect a Democratic Congress Nov06 in the hopes that you - us -- the Democratic Party -- would get tough, stand up and stop the hemoraging and get us the heck out of Iraq ... among other things.

What's the hold up? Let's get to it, already. Quit listening to the DC consultants. They have no earthly clue what us regular Americans are thinking or what we'll do. They haven't been regular Americans for years and they aren't good friends with any regular Americans.

Here's what we regular Americans think and want -- Bring our troops home! Re-establish no-fly zones and get Iran, Syria and Turkey to the "we're all in this together" table and get some buy-in on helping quel the chaos. Iran kicked us out 30 years ago and after a bumpy ride they've begun to right themselves. They seem to be one of the most democratic states in the region now. Ok, so they make bad decisions about electing Presidents. Look who we elected last time. I mean really -- How can we point fingers at Iran when we've got W struttin' around the world declaring himself Emperor Decider?

Here's the reality; Iraq will only straighten up when we leave the place. John Edwards said it best: "The best way to tell the world we're leaving Iraq is to actually START LEAVING.

Ready, set, GO!!

Dang you're good

This is great.

Count me in, too.

I'm not as eloquent

as Leslie, but I sent Cong. E. an e-mail asking specifically for his support of the two House Resolutions mentioned above.

ack!

The bill numbers!! sheesh. I knew I was forgetting something. :-/

Thanks chartreuse. I'd better do an addendum email.

chartreuse dog's picture

Oh, I think

you made your point all right, Les, he doesn't need the numbers to know where you stand! I'm guessing that a message like yours is more likely to be given to him to read, whereas mine will just be included in a summary report, x number of messages in favor or opposed. Good job!

I dont know

if I will send them out every day, but I certainly often have a lot of things to suggest for other people to write about.

Draft Brad Miller -- NC Sen ActBlue :::Petition

Count me in.

But I have to say the reason Congress is irrelevant is because they haven't yet exercised their authority. Why can't they get together and take this administration down? Waxman and Rangel appear to be willing. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Maybe -

Maybe they're waiting for anarchy.

Oh, wait.

anarchy -

OK, OK

I did it, I sent an email. Can I have the keys to the car now?

All kidding aside, I posted a comment (and email) over at Edwards blog to keep up the good work and that we (and by that I mean all of us) will have his back as long as he hammers back at the Swiffers and their feeble attempts at manipulating how our side conducts our campaigns.
