Hampton's Television Ad
Submitted by DrFrankLives on Mon, 04/07/2008 - 2:26pm.
Hampton Dellinger's first statewide TV ad shows the obvious strengths of his candidacy - strong record, progressive positions, and specific, sensible ideas - in a marketable, winning package.
For more information on Hampton Dellinger and why he should be North Carolina's next Lieutenant Governor (and how you can help him get there), please come over to the campaign web site. For more information, have a listen to what Branford Marsalis has to say on radios across the state about why Hampton Dellinger is the best candidate for Lt. Governor.

Thanks for watching this
.. Hampton will be liveblogging here on Sunday, April 20th, at 7 pm. Save up your questions.
"Hampton Dellinger would make a great Lieutenant Governor." - Al Gore.
DFL - we'll post a question thread on Saturday :) the 19th.
Probably late on the 19th since that's the convention day, and there will be a lot going on!
I'm looking forward to this one. I'm sure that people have a lot of questions for Hampton.

Great ad!!!
To me, Hampton is the real deal. I have no idea why he gets a bum rap on here. He has high-level government experience, is extremely intelligent and and energetic, has a progressive record (and yes, you can have a record with out siting in a legislature)and has been tremendously vocal about the issues he cares most about: the envornoment, senior citizens and health care, child welfare and education, and the continued racial disparities we find in NC.
I like Besse, too. But I feel that Hampton is the total package. In addition to what I said above, I (or anyone else on here, I bet) have no doubt that he will beat whoever the Republicans throw at us in the fall. And, the best part: There's no big compromise on policy substance between Dellinger and Besse. Dellinger is progressive. He is NOT the same old kind of politician.
So, as a liberal Democrat (what we called ourselves before the GOP Noise Machine turned the "L word" into a curse word), I have absolutely no qualms about voting for Hampton Dellinger.
I want a progressive Democrat who reflects my values and who will whop the Republican in the fall (also one of my values :)--no matter how well financed that opponent may be.
Why would I not choose Dellinger? Why would anyone not?
I'll give you an answer about the bumrap,
For progressives, it's a mistake to start a fundraising letter or blog post by telling us how much money you've already raised. I honestly think that's what started it. Because we don't care about that. Even though we know it's important, we want to know about ideas first, which is why other candidates have a better reputation with some progressive groups.
I really think that's it.

I understand completely
I've heard the same thing--even from family members who LOVE Hampton. They cringed when they read an early email about fund raising. But I think Hampton was just being honest about money. It is going to matter in beating Dalton (have you seen his harping Name ID ad??). Most everyone i know was worried that Dalton might blow us all out of the water on money and win the election that way. Hamp is a realistic person and wanted to show folks that he was raising the resources needed to communicate with the mass public state-wide. And, sadly, that takes a lot of money.
The feeling from a couple emails about fund raising should not trump the big picture here. Hampton's campaign is not about fund raising, it's about the issues i spoke of above. But money will be needed to get out the message. I wish everyone was online learning about the candidates, but unfortunately some are not (or can not be). So we have to reach out in traditional ways, too--TV, Radio, print ads, etc.
But if anyone wants to talk grass roots, they should talk to the dozens of volunteers who you came out last weekend to spread the word about Hampton.
Hampton has raised a good deal of money, but he also has a strong state-wide network of activists working hard because they believe in what he stands for.
Well, he'll have his chance to get his message out
with his live blog on April 20. I think it will be good for him to answer questions without a filter, and it will be good for people here to read the answers.

i look forward to the live blog
though i hope everyone isn't all politicked out from the County conventions.
The date was one submitted by Dellinger
I have a feeling that he's not ever politicked out! (said in the best spirit)

i can attest
to Hamp's love of politics. And of course he genuinely likes interacting with people. I assume you've heard--or read--his speech about why politics matter. You couldn't keep up the grueling pace he's maintained if you do not truly care about what you are trying to achieve.

I just looked quickly for these, so it's possible I missed some, but here are the diaries I saw that he's written. Sometimes a little negative, but all are issues based (with an occasional children's story thrown in), not about money.

Someone on the other thread talked about the person or group that thought Besse was the better candidate but ended up backing Dellinger. I can relate, since that's pretty much where I am - which means the bragging about fundraising, while unpleasant, apparently has been effective.
Let's win
Wouldn't it be great to have Hampton Dellinger in the LG's office? You know he wouldn't shy down from a good fight. Hhe would actually lead on issues, not just "play it safe".
Actually, that's one of my concerns
I've listened to Hamp speak several times, and I'm worried that he is giving people expectations that he would not be able, due to the nature of the position, actually accomplish. For instance, he spoke about budget priorities at the forum for mental health on Feb. 25, and insisted that he would make sure his budget priorities passed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in reality, the LG has little power to make that happen. The Governor is the one who issues the budget, and the legislature fights over it until they pass it. Is Hampton proposing another fighter in that battle?
If so, that's all well and good, but the longer Raleigh takes to pass a budget, the longer children sit on subsidy waiting lists for child care, etc. So here's a head's up. This will be a question on the live-blog night.
cheers!
