Heath Shuler Campaign at the Southeastern Energy and Environmental Expo
In addition to sweaty hours over this keyboard of ultimate power, I've been getting out to work towards a Democratic majority in November. While blogging is great fun and an excellent way to spread the word, it doesn't bring in the voters the way that face to face politics does. Helping to staff the Heath Shuler booth at this weekend's Southeastern Energy and Environmental Expo was a great way spend time with progressive voters.
I was there for only three hours, but the variety of views I heard from folks was enlightening. From the tough-on-immigration libertarians to the long-necked northern bluebloods, this crowd again demonstrated what a big tent the Democratic party works to maintain. Most of the people who stopped wanted to learn more about Shuler's environment and energy policy ideas, though a great number were simply seeking assurance that their growing political pragmatism will move the district towards the change they'd like to see. I enjoyed relaying Heath's vision of a "research triangle" for alternative energies here in western North Carolina, and most everyone was buoyed to see the the League of Conservation Voters endorsement.
The issue that unified all of the people I talked to was a unanimous contempt for Congressman Charles Taylor, who did not have a presence at S.E.E. Expo. Some talked about his corporate ties. Others discussed his slumlording. Even more rolled their eyes about CAFTA. All were given hope by news of Shuler's lead in four polls.
Over at Scrutiny Hooligans you'll find more photos of the event, including a group opposing transporting nuclear fuel on NC-11 interstate highways, Blue Ridge Biofuels, the North Carolina Green Party, cruelty-free clothing, and some of the "greener" vehicles on display (Shuler bought a used electric vehicle when he attended the expo on Saturday).

Glad to see you getting out Screwy!
You must have had a big time representing! Thanks for this post and the info on Heath. I can feel your excitement from here!
No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.
Excellent!
I most especially appreciate you getting out and pressing the flesh. Good work!
I love it!
Doesn't it energize you to get out and do the good old fashioned grassroots work too? I know I love it and it helps me with my writing. I love blogging, but I love meeting people and attending campaign events.

Scares me.
I'm an extreme introvert and flat-out wallflower in almost every social situation. When I have to get out there, I can, but it's high anxiety all the way.
That said, you can count on me to be cheering from the sidelines!
I'm an introvert too!
but it's energizing to step outside the old comfort zone every now and then....

No Way Anglico
As aggressive a writer as you are, I can not believe you are shy! Don't you know that everyone else is just a scared as you are? "Power is in the hands of those who take it!"
I may get my feelings hurt by putting myself out there...but those bruises aren't visible or lasting...
You have an inner power Anglico, I can tell by your posts, get out there and enable that power....It's crying to get out! (it will give you a rush like you won't believe to let yourself be seen and heard! JUST DO IT!)

Fire on the mountain!
WTG, Screwie Hoolie. Get those mountain Dems fired up and out to the polls.
BTW, there are more registered Dems in NC-11 than registered Republicans. Some Screwy blogger told me that. ;)
Great meeting you in Henderson County and thanks again for doing the vlog interview. Everyone loved it!
