High expectations

The pundit pages are filled these days with advice and good wishes to our new Governor. From my career in business, it feels like a serious case of pent-up demand. Expectations are running higher than is healthy, in my opinion. But so far it looks the Governor is striking the right balance in terms of sanity and reasonableness.

From Fayetteville: Perdue likely will exceed expectations from the public if she’s even only markedly more outgoing than Easley, who made few public appearances and liked to work from behind the scenes. The new governor also should work well with the legislature on education initiatives, since she served there for 22 years — 14 as a legislator and eight most recently as lieutenant governor.

O-No! making a list and checking it thrice.

BlueRidgeNow, and others, are focused on the backpedaling on community college tuition.

Here's the list of promises we'll all be keeping an eye on.

The free community college tuition is a big one

and I hope it won't be on the back burner for long, but common sense should tell us that changes in the economy will prevent some of these promises from becoming reality in the short run.

How is she going to pay for that?

im paying $42 a semester hour. So far my classes have had between 15 and 28 students. With more classes toward 28. That is a lot of money gone from the school if we are not paying tuition. Then again, I think Florida does this already?

Wonder if the price of books would go up to off-set this? Something somewhere has to go up to be cost neutral.

I also kinda like the idea of tuition. I can see folks signing up for classes then dropping the class. I fear that if a class drops below a certain level of students, it will be cost effective to just cancel the course vice completing the course. With money out of pocket invested, the likelihood of that happening diminishes. Charging something for the course provides some ownership to the process. Maybe a refund upon completion of the course? Forfeiture of the funds if you drop? I mean $42 a semester hour is nothing really. BOOKS, now there is where the heart attacks happen!

I enrolled in a couple classes and decided to get my books. Walked into the book store, one of the workers helped me, asked if I wanted new or used, said used, got a 20% discount on two of my three books. Bill was $224. DANG that hit hard. They were paper back books. Was ready for next visit to book store, I brought a pace maker with me. They say there is an anatomy book that goes for $300 by itself. Yea, I'm not going in the medical field.

Yea the books are a bear, but you can even sell those back if you have not messed them up.
