If you can read this,
Then something is finally working! Man, it's been a rough 18 hours down here in the Blue Mines, but I think we finally have things at least sort of close to normal. There have been casualties, though. Find out more about that below the fold.
Groups are dead -- something in the updated groups module wasn't playing nice with, I don't know, something else. For now, if you're a member of 100c, the LTE Shop, BlueNCWoW, etc., your access to the group is down. I think that I got all of the group content "unpublished" (still in the system, but not available until I can work out the privacy settings that were wreaking havoc behind the scenes).
Also, the theme is kind of wonky. I can fix this, but for the sake of my health and the health of my marriage, it won't be happening in the short term.
You may notice some other differences. If they're good, well then good! If they're bad, come back and leave a comment on this post. I'll review tonight. Thanks!

Thanks
For getting something up. You guys do great work!

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?
I like the longer list of blog posts
That's really, really good.
Can hardly read or even see the "reply," "6 comments," "read more," "Lance's blog," "edit" "email this page," etc below the posts and comments.
But don't ruin health or marriage over any of this. Go get some rest, family time, etc.
Love you, Lance. It somehow looks cleaner and sharper but maybe that's my eyes?

I like the longer lists of posts too, DQ. I think we'll keep that. Thanks for the kind words, folks!

Is anyone else having weird text sizes? For me the right is much bigger than usual, and the stuff like "reply", "read more" etc are really small.

I love complements that aren't given merely as a prelude to criticism! (Not that I necessarily mind criticism in the whole BlueNC form/function arena; I just like compliments better.)
I like the spacing between lines
and the listing of recent comments. BOTH are great great great. But I thought you were going to take a break????/

Pffffffft
If my request for a pink, yellow and orange colored theme with a doily edge and flower hot buttons is not going to be honored then I'm leaving......in a huff. :)
Of course, Blue is beautiful. I know how hard you had to work to fix the issues. The little widget thing I downloaded to display titles on my site was going crazy displaying titles as the site came back up.

One of the manifestations of the permissions issues we were having was that the newest post showing on the front page was from June of 2006!

Heh. That's one way to get more front-pagers . . . then again . . . it's also a good way to make everybody sick of me.

It's harder to find new comments
The little red "new" doesn't signal new comments as well as a block of color. I scan for new all the time and this makes it harder to find them.
Also, would it be better if the comment's name wasn't all the way to the far right? Tight with the comment title seems faster.
I know I'm being a spoiled brat here, but I am. As much time as I spend here, I really notice extra steps . . . like having to look in two places instead of one.

5 should be reserved for original research/reporting
or really amazing work pulling together pieces from different media sources.

we need a
post detailing an exact rating system to go up top on the about section.
maybe something Like,
5- original research/reporting
4- very important topics, need attention
3- good posts, worth a read
2- below good
1- dont look at it
Draft Brad Miller -- NC Sen ActBlue :::Liddy 44 Brad 33
"Keep the Faith"
We'll have one,
But I thought it would be better coming out of conversations (like this one!). Blue South, my sense is basically the same as yours — that a three-star rating should be viewed as a friendly compliment, four-star a hearty recommendation, and five stars reserved for something that truly stands above.
But: while original research and reporting contribute greatly to a post's quality, I don't think that it's fair to say that every post with original research or reporting should get that five star rating. Similarly, I can imagine that someone would post a short personal statement that expresses serious thoughts with such eloquence that it deserves a five star rating. (Like maybe if Abraham Lincoln had previewed his Gettysburg address here, we would have given it a fiver.)
My two cents.
I hate all this rating and voting crap.
This is NOT a national site. If it's a slow day for users, a great post will get ignored. If it's a busy day for frontpagers, you'll have a million posts and good ones will get buried. I know you all don't like the idea but I think you need daily (or half-daily) editors who front-page or don't front-page things based on quality, relevance, the content of the site that day, and whether the material is repetitious.
If there are several posts of interest that don't stand on their own, that editor can do a wrap-up with links to the other material and even article in newspapers that are relevant.
All the stars and voting seem ridiculous to me. But then, I'm not a fan of kos or mydd.
“All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players.” So enjoy the drama.
We're going somewhere with the voting
I hoped to post on that tonight, but work has gotten the better of me, so it will have to wait a day or two. So let me beg for a little leeway.
Besides, what better judge of what is quality, relevant or repetitious than the community? A perfect voting system (which we would never claim to have) would highlight exactly what people value. It seems to me that all there is to argue about is whether we can get close enough to perfect to achieve more of that sweet, sweet democratic benefit than we suffer in terms of drawbacks.
I think that the stars are, at least, a step in the right direction. Roughly speaking, 50% of people didn't even notice the old "vote to front page" button, and half again of those who did didn't really know what to do with it. Everybody understands stars! (Even if the stars themselves are a bit silly. And red.)
Here's why a rating system isn't ridiculous: for all but the hard core junkies, there is too much content on this site for a body to keep up with. If you only visit the site 2-5 times per week, one way to gauge what's worth reading is what gets front-paged. But there you're depending on the whims and observancy of a small and fixed group of insiders. Another way is the number of comments, but some of the best sorts of people find value in things that don't inspire a lot of chatter. (Besides which, you'd only end up reading open threads that way.)
But if you had enough data coming in on reader preferences, you could compile a list (like this one) showing posts off the front page that people are enjoying. It's sort of the anti-front page, a running community guide to what's worth reading.
So now that I've sort of blown the secret, let me just say that if you click on "My account" in the left sidebar, then the "edit" tab across the top of the center column, you'll find a spot on your page where you can enable a block called "hot_stuffs" (which is the kind of stupid development name that amuses me, and which will change to something more intuitive when I have the time to change the code that depends on the current name).
Circles would be prettier than stars.
Wouldn't they?
Do good. Be nice. Have fun.
They would be. Or little Mike Easleys.
We can have whatever -- I think it's just a Photoshop job. I'll try to take a look this weekend at coming up with something that is, at least, blue.

have a certain "Che" thing going for them that appeals to the revolutionary in my soul.

Here is why I don't mind the ratings
It shouldn't be up to the front pagers. What we think is good content might be different than what the community values at times. Why should we determine that for our readers beyond what we choose to write ourselves. I would rather this be in the hands of the community.
Over time and through our discussions we can determine at least a suggestion for what the stars should mean and go from there.
Until a newcomer gets comfortable with the rating system they might just choose to leave long comments. Once they see how people respond to their comments, they hopefully will work up the courage to post a diary.
