This is helpful to have all of these links pulled. The issue certainly is spreading but frankly since Wilson and Rocky Mount are two of the three largest cities in the east, that should be sufficient. We can send this and continue to spread the word.

I have been told there are numerous letters out and to newspapers.

This story is pretty amusing given the turn of events. I think we found that there is evidence the CEO Jesse Tilton knew his interest rates were rising the month before this story and we know the rest of the story - bingo - $12 million later we have 2% of the rate increase. Of course no one else knew and no one told the Wilson Times. It was a big secret.

And, if I remember correctly there were discussions about oil prices then and was not the price of coal already on the rise with increased use worldwide, so ... why did Wilson get this story and why was ElectriCities putting out this rather definitive word.

Seems to me we have plenty of people on board and are ready to have a press conference just before the August 22 board meeting. Thoughts?

If we can finish getting info pulled together we have people who have sent information for Dan's chart too. So we could unveil that as well.

I don't see any benefit to living in the city limits of CLayton. Infact, 6 years ago when we were house-searching in Clayton we specifically we looking to buy a home outside the city limits. If you live within the city limits (and we have friends that do), you have to pay whatever they're charging for trash/sewer & water. Then they sell you electricity at their outrageous rates, you pay to the Town of Clayton for electric, not Progress Energy. Anyone I know who lives in the city limits complains about the electric rates.

This is a blast on Wilson and NCEMPA

Lucama is, however, one of only a handful of municipalities in North Carolina that do not take their power supplies from one of the state’s two large municipal power agencies. These two power agencies, which are called the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency (NCEMPA) and the North Carolina Municipal Power Agency No. 1 (NCMPA1), are both heavily indebt and have rates that are, in general, 20% to 30% higher than those of the state’s two large investor-owned utilities, Duke Power and Progress Energy Carolinas. Lucama’s largest neighbor, the City of Wilson, is a member of NCEMPA and has residential electric rates that are approximately 20% higher than those of Lucama.

Up until 1998 the Town of Lucama purchased its wholesale power supplies from the City of Wilson. In 1995, however, the Town of Lucama joined with the Towns of Stantonsburg and Black Creek to examine the possibility of the three towns leaving Wilson purchasing their power supplies on the open wholesale power markets. In February of 1998, Stantonsburg, Lucama, and Black Creek made their break from Wilson permanent when they began purchasing their power supplies from Dominion NC Power.

In order to begin to purchase wholesale power supplies from Dominion NC Power, the three towns first jointly built a substation with financing spread over fifteen year period. The end result of this power project resulted in each of the towns’ wholesale cost of power being decreased by roughly 50% less than the cost that it formerly paid to Wilson. Over the first five years of the project, the estimated joint saving for all three Towns was close to $7 million.

Lucama passed these savings onto its citizens by cutting retail electric rates by 35%. Since 1998, retail rates in Lucama have not changed until July 2005. The fact that retail rates have not changed in seven years, is almost as amazing as the initial rate cut of 35% when one considers that the cost of all energy products have skyrocketed in the past seven years.

It is important to keep in mind the estimated savings that Lucama has achieved through its access to the open wholesale power markets. Since 1998, Lucama’s citizens have saved approximately $3 million by accessing the wholesale power market.

Utility Rates for the city of Louisburg, NC

Sorry, this is a little astray from residential utilities but I have to find out why the electric rates are so much higher in the town of Louisburg, NC. A store in Youngsville, NC (about 10 miles away) pays $75 a month for lights when a store in the town of Louisburg pays on an average of $350.00 a month, all things be relatively equal. Why? and where does the additional income go? I'd appreciate any information.

Attorneys representing the agency have helped save the ratepayers money, and without their expertise, the agency could have made bad decisions resulting in higher electric bills.

I think I can speak for many and say that we understand there will be attorney fees. But the taxpayers need to know they were justified expenses and reveal them.

If the attorneys helped save us money, how? If the bills would have been higher, what did they do to save money?

Since regional governments created it wonder if they can dissolve it. Sell assets back to PGN and/or Duke and use the money for other infrastructure or negotiate an rate reduction for a term for those it now serves.
